Afghanistan into semi-finals after Bangladesh thriller, Australia out

Afghanistan into semi-finals after Bangladesh thriller, Australia out Jun 26, 2024 Sports Afghanistan’s players celebrate victory over Bangladesh at the T20 World Cup which sealed a place in the semi-finals and eliminated Australia. (Randy Brooks) AFP – Afghanistan advanced to their first-ever senior world tournament semi-final with a nerve-jangling eight-run victory over Bangladesh at the T20 World Cup on Monday that eliminated mighty Australia. Amid excruciating tension at the Arnos Vale Stadium in St Vincent, Afghan captain Rashid Khan and seamer Naveen ul Haq were the heroes as Afghanistan battled through three rain stoppages to secure a famous victory under the DLS scoring method that was sealed after 1am local time. Defending a modest total of 115-5 on a bowler-friendly surface, Rashid finished with figures of 4-23 while Naveen took 4-26 as Bangladesh were dismissed for 105, chasing a revised target of 114 off 19 overs. An unbeaten 54 from Bangladesh opener Litton Das (49 balls, five fours, one six) threatened to deny Afghanistan’s fairytale win and earn Australia the last semi-final spot. Naveen-ul-Haq took 4 for 26.  (AFP/Getty Images) But pacer Naveen claimed the last two wickets – Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman – off consecutive deliveries to trigger delirious Afghan celebrations and leave a disconsolate Das stranded at the non-striker’s end. “We have worked so hard over the past few years and we were dreaming of this day. It’s a surreal experience,” said a relieved but delighted “Man of the Match” Naveen. “We always knew they were going to be coming hard at us to try to get the target in 12.1 overs but we stuck to the task and kept getting wickets.” – ‘Make the country proud’ – With India defeating Australia earlier in the day and advancing to the second semi-final against England in Guyana on Thursday, this result assured the Afghans of second spot in the group and eliminated the Aussies and Bangladeshis. Afghanistan will now face South Africa in the first semi-final in Trinidad on Wednesday. Earlier, leg-spinner Rishad Hossain claimed three for 26 to lead the impressive Bangladeshi bowling effort. Despite another good opening stand – 59 off 10.4 overs – the Afghans failed to capitalise on that platform with topscorer Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s laborious 43 off 55 balls typifying the struggle to get the ball away. Ibrahim Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai managed to get into double-figures but the rate of scoring remained pedestrian throughout. We didn’t make good decisions and going forward we need to think about our batting.” It was left to Rashid (19 not out) to belt three sixes – there was only one more in the entire innings – in the final two overs to help dribble the score over the 100-run mark. “The belief came when we beat New Zealand (at the group stage),” said the Afghan captain in explaining his team’s journey to this unprecedented achievement. “We thought 130-135 would be a good total on this wicket, but still, we knew if we stuck to our plans we would have a good chance to defend the total. We just gave 100 percent effort, to make the country and the people back home proud of us.” Scores: Afghanistan 115 for 5 (Gurbaz 43, Rishad 3-26) beat Bangladesh 105 (Litton 54*, Rashid 4-23, Naveen 4-26) by eight runs via DLS method. Carlos Peterson-Griffith is Guyana’s second WR holder and first Open Classic

Carlos Peterson-Griffith is Guyana’s second WR holder and first Open Classic Jun 26, 2024 Sports Winston ‘The Little Master’ Stoby Winston ‘The Little Master’ Stoby was our first as a Masters 2 athlete Kaieteur Sports – Whilst the nation is still in a celebratory mood and overjoyed by the recent feat of Carlos ‘The Showstopper’ Petterson-Griffith at the recent Worlds Open Powerlifting Championship held in Druskininkai Lithuania, the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) would like to inform the public that Carlos became the first athlete in the Open category to set a world record with his squat of 337.5kg. One would recall that he had attempted this feat in England at Sheffield 24 but came up short in that memorable battle with the USA’s Gavin Aiden. The records of GAPLF informs that the first Guyanese athlete to achieve a world record in the sport is the trail blazing and accomplished, Winston ‘The little Master’ Stoby. Carlos Petterson-Griffith Stoby’s feat was achieved over a decade ago in the 74kg Masters 2 Division, first at the World Masters Powerlifting Championships held in Killeen Texas, October 2012 and he added more kgs almost a year later at the 31st World Masters Men’s Powerlifting Championships held in Orlando, Florida, September, 2013. Carrying the nation on his shoulders then, Stoby destroyed his old deadlift World Record of 272.0kg set one year earlier at the World Masters Powerlifting Championships held in Killeen Texas, USA with a new record of 277.5kg to win the gold medal in that lift but had to settle for overall silver medal as the USA’s Gregory Page won the gold. He did try to raise the bar even higher by attempting 280kg on his third and final lift but was not successful, he set the new WR on his second attempt. The GAPLF and by extension, the nation, is very proud of both Stoby and Petterson-Griffith for their achievements and would continue to work towards high standards being maintained. Dominic Tyrell’s achievement of a Deadlift bronze is also commendable in his first year as a senior athlete and the Federation is confident that Tyrell will continue to grow and set himself apart in the sport. Meanwhile, next up for Guyana on the international scene will be the World Classic & Equipped Sub-Junior & Junior Powerlifting Championships set for Malta, August/September where Romeo Hunter would be competing in his final year as a sub-junior. Hunter won the Squat gold medal at the 2023 championship which took place in Romania. Related Similar Articles
