Prime Minister Gaston Browne has responded to comments made by the Political Leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP) during an appearance on Connecting with Dave Lester Payne on Observer/News Co. Ltd.
The Prime Minister expressed deep concern over what he described as alarming remarks regarding the UPP’s internal candidate selection process for the upcoming general election.
In his response, Browne outlined three key points he believes were conveyed by the UPP Leader. First, the leader suggested that UPP candidates would be selected without any primary process, even in cases where multiple individuals expressed interest in contesting seats. Secondly, the UPP Leader purportedly indicated his intention to exercise veto power over candidate selection, bypassing any primary result. Thirdly, it was stated that the UPP Leader had already decided on ten new candidates to represent the party in the election.

“If I have correctly understood and interpreted these statements by the Political Leader of that party correctly and as intended to convey, then I would respectfully suggest that someone has gone completely mad or that such an individual is no longer fit to be considered as the leader of any political party, anywhere,” Browne declared.
He went on to criticize the UPP, claiming that the party had “lost its way” and that its approach to leadership and candidate selection was undemocratic and dictatorial. Browne urged voters to reject what he described as unconstitutional actions by the opposition, calling for the creation of a new opposition party to provide a viable alternative to the ruling Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP).
Anderson E. Carty, a social and political advocate, also weighed in on the issue, adding further fuel to the debate surrounding the future direction of the UPP and the country’s political landscape.
This latest statement from Prime Minister Browne highlights ongoing tensions between the ABLP and the UPP as both parties prepare for the next general election.
