HomeCARIBBEAN NEWSLETTER: Save Caribbean Airport Services for staff
spot_imgspot_img

DEAR EDITOR:

Companies have been holding talks for the past months seeking cooperation and participation from Government, ABAA, and Private Sector to save CAS for the staff. The valiant staff have been working under extreme circumstances to keep their Aircraft contracts while the Shareholders, LIAT 74 (51%) & Massey (49%) have now gotten a Decision from the Court to dissolve the company. The expected three month advance notice is pending.

The efforts to save CAS for the staff is being thwarted by the mafia styled attitude of a group of monied interests. The plans behind many who seek to operate on the VCBIA ramp may have been spurred on by the grand rewards from Contraband & Drug smuggling which is once more coming into Antigua, especially during the COVID which saw the drugs by any means necessary.

The persons seeking to seize the Ground Operation of CAS have in their ranks privileged government chosen, and monied local business persons.

The main problem in Antigua is the failure of Government to include the local people in the money. The experience of the CAS staff has value, because you cannot just go out on the street and find a fully experienced and functional ground handling human resource. The cumulative years of experience of specifically trained staff per type of aircraft, has allowed the operation to stay alive in the face of the demise of the 51% shareholder LIAT 74.

Clearly their outstanding debt will make it impossible to cover by any clean business entity, and will require government assistance in writing off their debt, rather than seizure of equipment.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the remnant of what was the Caribbean Regional Airline, the machine of integration, spanning the end of colonialism, into the dawn of independence.
