Fifty years ago three individuals, Dr. Vincent Richards (Antigua), Makeda Mikael (Antigua) and Dr. George Huggins with the support of UNDP tried to link the Caribbean to West Africa, through Nigeria, Antigua & Trinidad.
Caribbean-West African Tourism/Trade Exchange between the three island was expected to draw in the region. Today we anxiously await the reincarnation of the idea now being actualized through Antigua and Nigeria, with LIAT our Caribbean airline and Air Peace of Nigeria coming together to reverse the route across the mid-Atlantic.

Those persons who are caught up with the LIAT operation in the 30/70 shareholding context, need to recognize that just as its trade of human cargo was the reason for the success of the centuries old activity, so will trade from Nigeria and Tourism exchange and Caribbean expertise, fill the air transport across the Atlantic creating a successful linkage.
The success of LIAT 2020 will be measured in the success of the entire Air Peace plus trade enterprise, and the oil-rich nation of Nigeria provides also a great gateway to the rest of West Africa and their varied economic sectors, to be exploited by our islands in the Caribbean basin.
This economic style was exhibited in Antigua with Allen Stanford, whom all must recognize as a most creative businessman, whose idea was to use businesses to advertise the main business. This way it is not significant whether LIAT 2020 makes money, as it will be providing a service to the Trade & Development program of the Nigeria-Caribbean partnership, and which will absorb any losses.
All the talk of LIAT 2020 being a totally private carrier, will not deprive the islands of its essential services, in the face of global warming and its effects of which we are fully aware. We know what living on faults lines in an earthquake zone entails; and with destruction and desolation by hurricanes every 10 years or less, LIAT has been there for the islands, that cannot change.
Nigeria and Antigua have a similar reputation on the global market in that the culture of business is tarnished with corruption at different levels. Antigua, being a relatively poor island among other developing islands whose names are known like Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, the 108 sq. ml. Island, unfortunately, is known internationally for attracting strange investment with corrupt strings attached. Like everything consumed in Antigua its international criminal activity is also imported, and operated by expatriate investors, one of whom is probably in jail forever.
Nigeria on the other hand has been exploited by those who first penetrated the country to kidnap or buy and relocate humans to a slave’s life of toil, torture and degradation. Oil was not the beginning of corruption but it certainly has provided the vehicle for Big Oil to use its hidden activity to corrupt and control.
The very cultural way of returning the favor by never returning an empty handed ‘thank you’, the colonials converted into a bribe.

It therefore must be clearly recognized that the Africans coming to invest are the current family of our ancient ancestors, whose four hundred years missing history, has confused our once African culture into an unrecognizable pepper pot of different worlds. We are a new people of African descent, no longer continentals, but islanders!
We welcome the return of LIAT in Nigerian shared aircraft and under Nigerian control, and look forward to cementing the union.
