HomeCARIBBEAN NEWSLETTER: VCBIA old people at it again
spot_imgspot_img

DEAR EDITOR:

The two octogenarians and the geriatric management of our International airport are fighting once more to hide the big breaches of security occurring daily. Between the Chair & the CEO & the landowner, it is difficult to guess the final outcome because of the neediness of the three of them.

The Security of the entire airport is a serious concern as the paid top guns need the job in spite of their being over the age limit to be useful, and the land owner is demanding the rights to perform as a landowning stakeholder. This dilemma is unique as Antigua & Barbuda are seeking to make their own rules as it pertains to Safety & Security of the Airports by sidestepping the international rules for member countries of the Aviation Organizations which rule globally.

Recently it was discovered that for four years unregulated operations have been allowed in the secure zones of the airport with full authorization by the Directorate responsible for Safety & Security. When discovered and an investigation demanded, the airport bigwigs immediately circled their wagons in protection of their top servants, eased those responsible for the breach out of their job and the country, burying the misdeeds under a very shaky coverup.

As usual in coverups like this in the government sector, a fall guy has to be found or created, but resistance is compelling a hearing and a full investigation. Business individuals who use the airport want to know what is being done about the discovery of illegal operations at our main international airport, and will this be an opening for our Barbuda ‘international’ airport to follow the trend of Security violations as in Antigua.

Antigua Airport needs a full overhaul, training and restructuring the employees and Management to run a well regulated and technologically efficient airport. The new additions to management at VCBIA are just stop-a-gap measures which only cause more damage. Let’s face it, old people are still useful, but in aviation only their consulting brain can offer advice, but affecting the objective is often complicated by physical immobility and failure to keep up with the times.

The international guidance regarding the future of aviation is recognizing the need for young blood with technologically advanced minds to take aviation to the ‘Next Level.’ Antigua needs to get rid of the dry rot which is choking progress in this most important vehicle of Tourism.

Instead of having old people making a spectacle of their old quarrelsome selves in such a visible and dangerous manner, Antigua needs to seek help from one of their international social partners to overhaul their two airports putting Antigua on the same international standing as Barbados & Jamaica our two tourism competitors who took the leap to successfully uplifting their Airports.

Increasing fees and lowering standards is not acceptable!
