DEAR EDITOR: Too many illegal acts are being overlooked and covered up at V. C. Bird International airport which continue to downgrade aviation, and preempt any restoration of our airport to its prior status.
The removal of the SDC tower which should never have been built on airport compound or environs is not the wrongful issue, but demolition anywhere on island requires a series of measures and authorizations which were clearly overlooked.
Additionally, the unbalanced state of affairs at the main terminal, the staff and management contention over backpay and arbitrary actions of senior staff, are all causing concern with unauthorized actions by unfit personnel.

Who are the contracted cleaners of the vast overgrown airport lands, and whom are the owners of the equipment being used? Are local black Antiguans being allowed to share in the repair gains of their airport, or as usual do they simply sit and wait for the small job of carting off the rubbish?
The introduction of an Ethics Committee at VCBIA can only bring good airport governance into the equation, and the airport may then be favorably considered in its quest to regain its Category 1 status. As aviation is an internationally controlled industry, for Antigua & Barbuda to regain its respect among regional airports and the International marketplace, the Rules and Regulations of Civil Aviation must once again be followed by all, including and especially the management of ABAA.
Antigua operates as a recalcitrant member of the Aviation community, making and breaking international rules as it chooses, without responding to ICAO and IATA demands for the Registration of a Difference. This important distinction in Airport Operations requires any deviation from the rule be disclosed to the International Regulators, in what is labeled Registering a Difference.
This is to ensure that all flying into the island’s airport are aware of the change to the rule, and the Safety & Security measures put in place to guarantee the same results as the Rule or Regulation ensured.

Arbitrary behavior in the operation of an airport is totally unacceptable, and hiding violations is a breach which could cause the status of the airport to be further devalued. The ability of operators to move about the restricted compound of airports, is governed by strict background checks of the individuals, whose movements are controlled by the zones which their work space demands. After their work experience is evaluated and their background checks cleared, only then are they allowed access through a Security Pass, accorded to their employer on the airport for their identification.
Currently ABAA is confounded in its need to cover up a serious violation where staff of two Courier companies operating in St. John’s were given full access to the Restricted Areas of Customs and the Ramp, under falsely issued Airport Security Passes for their vehicles and personnel. When the airline in question demanded an investigation, the matter was found to be such a serious violation, that the Director of Safety & Security was immediately given a package to disappear. And, an operation was set up by Airport management to discredit the airline Operator, and most importantly put a blanket over the violation. This, in direct opposition to the demands of all aviation authorities which insist on investigation of violations, and the measures implemented to prevent reoccurrence.

To date this investigation has been paused while the airport continues to create measures to bury the 3 year violation, having disappeared the Director of Safety & Security, to prevent the matter being properly investigated. Mindful that the same Director had been under a cloud after his having been pulled over in Miami airport with dangerous contraband in his bags. The rumor is that his departure was quickly ordered by others in high places to whom he reported.
An Airport Ethics Committee would give those innocent persons and operators who get blamed by management cover-up, an avenue for recourse.
