As Antigua’s first locally owned and operated Small Aircraft Ground Handling Operation, Ports Services Ltd, seeks to hand over to the younger generation, it reminisces on the 35 years of aviation services home grown in Antigua & Barbuda.
The timeline is important, 1989 – 2025 currently owned and operated by an Antiguan family, during which time Ports Services Ltd. established Ground Handling for single engine and propeller aircraft. Thus creating the airport’s small aircraft hub for small aircraft feeding off the International carriers, carrying their high-end passengers to BVI, Anguilla, Nevis, St.Barts, Barbuda and Montserrat.
Small Aircraft soon included Private jets, all requiring only a passenger vehicle, no steps, no baggage carts, and soon the few jets which brought the Mill Reef and CocoPointe residents and guests were added to the fleet.

Mill Reefers and in particular the Mellon crew introduced the concept of an FBO, and introduced Ports Services Ltd. to the National Business Aviation Association, the US based International organization of Corporate Aviation. FBO 2000 Antigua Ltd. introduced Full Service FBO Services to Nevis, St. Kitts and the Eastern Caribbean, offering services throughout the region.
During that time Ports Services Ltd. encouraged other entrepreneurs into the business using its own premises and clients, PSL helped to establish another Ground Handler at VCBIA, and a Cargo Operator at the Cargo Shed. They could be considered the first two of a program to adopt entrepreneurs which followed.
Ports Services Ltd. has during its 35 years in existence never fell afoul of the Airport Authority but was a thorn in the side of Antigua’s and the Caribbean’ biggest crook, who ended up in jail after he failed to wipe out Ports Services and its sister companies, Antigua Hangars Inc. and Bizjet-to-Yacht Inc.
Ports Services Ltd is currently working with The People’s Union to find ways and means of saving the jobs of a threatened company’s employees. The basic approach is to adopt an entrepreneur, and help create a Ground Handling Operation which saves the human resource investment of the clients, and making shareholders of the staff. It is a work in progress.
