—Pres. Ali says financial contribution to PPP does not equate to protection
Kaieteur News- President Irfaan Ali, speaking at Babu Jaan, Corentyne, Berbice, on Sunday afternoon, underscored that the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) remains unwavering in its principles and will not be influenced by financial contributions or personal interests.
Addressing supporters, Ali outlined the importance of remaining aware of the country’s political landscape and values. “We must be conscious about our political environment, we must be conscious about our future, we must be conscious of the values that we represent,” he stated. To this end, he made it clear that financial contributions to the PPP do not equate to political protection.
“If one believes that they can make a contribution to the PPP, and by making such a contribution, the PPP must defend every wrongdoing, they are mistaken. That is not the philosophy of the People’s Progressive Party,” Ali declared.
He continued, “This party cannot be bought, or sold or traded. That is not the philosophy of this party. We can never be bought or sold or traded.”
Although the president did not name any individuals, his comments came in the wake of businessman, Nazar “Shell” Mohamed, publicly discussing his long-standing support for the PPP and his family’s contributions to the party. Mohamed’s remarks followed the government’s refusal to renew his cabotage permission.
Mohamed, who was sanctioned by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) last year, has claimed that his businesses are being systematically affected due to what he described as a misrepresentation of the sanctions by the PPP administration. Vice President and General Secretary of the PPP, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, had previously stated that the government would not risk the future of the country or face potential consequences by associating with Nazar Mohamed and his son, Azruddin Mohamed.
