Joshi leads Diamond Insurance Nat’l Women’s Chess C/ship

Kaieteur Sports- Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Aditi Joshi has taken the lead in the Diamond Insurance Women’s Chess Championship, securing crucial victories in the first four rounds of competition last weekend at the David Rose Special School, Georgetown.

The highly anticipated nine-round, round-robin tournament began Saturday last (March 22), bringing together ten contenders vying for the prestigious 2025 National Women’s Chess Championship title. The tournament opened with a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation as competitors geared up for intense battles on the chessboard.
Joshi’s aggressive playing style has been instrumental in her early dominance. She secured victories against Italy Ton-Chung, Ciel Clement, WCM Sasha Shariff, and Aniyah Couchman, positioning herself as the front-runner. This marks Joshi’s third appearance in the Women’s National Championships, and at just fourteen years old, she is determined to claim the title. With rapid progress over the past two years, culminating in her earning the WCM title at the last Chess Olympiad in Hungary, she appears closer than ever to achieving her dream.
One of her most challenging matches came against Italy Ton-Chung, stretching to 69 moves before Joshi delivered a decisive checkmate in an electrifying endgame. Against Clement, Shariff, and Couchman, she exerted relentless pressure, compelling them to resign before reaching checkmate.
Hot on Joshi’s heels are Aniyah Couchman and defending champion WCM Jessica Callender, both with three points. Callender, a formidable competitor, is set to face Joshi in a pivotal matchup this weekend. Meanwhile, Couchman, fresh off a victory in the Women’s Qualifiers, has made a strong comeback after a year-long hiatus, displaying notable improvement. Couchman secured wins against Angelina Yhap, Treskole Archibald, and Kataleya Sam. Callender, on the other hand, claimed victories over Lusianna Farlot and Yhap while drawing with Archibald and Ton-Chung.
Archibald and Clement currently hold 2.5 points each, while Sam and Ton-Chung have 1.5 points. Yhap and Shariff stand at 1 point, with Farlot still seeking her first win. The championship resumes this weekend, with rounds set for March 29 and 30, leading up to the final game on Saturday, April 5.

The tournament follows classical time controls, granting players 90 minutes with a 30-second increment per move. FIDE Arbiter John Lee, supported by National Arbiter Kim Shing Chong, is officiating matches to ensure fair play and adherence to international chess standards.
This event also serves as an opportunity for unrated players to earn their initial ELO ratings by securing results against rated opponents, further expanding the pool of female-rated players in Guyana.
