Court Orders “Critic” to pay the Mohameds $52M

Kaieteur News- Social Media personality Mikhail Rodrigues popularly known as the ‘Guyanese critic’ has lost an appeal on Monday to overturn a $52M defamation lawsuit the Mohameds, Nazar and Azruddin had won against him and his media company, “They Break News”.
In a press release sent out on Monday afternoon the Mohameds’ lawyers, Eusi Anderson Esq., Renea Marcus and Malachi Griffith said that the ruling that Rodrigues must pay them $52M stands.
With regard to the his appeal to set aside the judgement, Justice Nigel Niles reportedly ruled that “the explanation given by the Applicants (Rodrigues and They Break News Inc) … are woefully inadequate and the Applicants have failed to satisfy this Court that the explanation given was reasonable’

The Honourable Justice Nigel Niles on March 31, 2025 made the following orders in favour of Nazar Mohamed and Azruddin Mohamed against Mikhail Rodrigues:
1. The Judgement of GYD$52m made against Rodrigues, in favour of the Mohameds, stands as Rodrigues’ appeal of this judgement is dismissed.
2. The injunction against Rodrigues and They Break News Inc., his media outfit, preventing him from further defaming the Mohameds continues in full effect. Rodrigues’ appeal against this injunction was dismissed.
3. Justice Niles ordered that the Rodrigues pay the sum of $75,000.00 costs each to Nazar Mohamed and Azruddin Mohamed for the loss of this appeal.
4. Opining on the Rodrigues Application to set aside default judgment granted against him and They Break News Inc., the Judge said- “the explanation given by the Applicants (Rodrigues and They Break News Inc) … are woefully inadequate and the Applicants have failed to satisfy this Court that the explanation given was reasonable’:
5. By way of context, the Court on 14th July, 2024 granted default judgment to Nazar and Azruddin Mohamed against the Guyanese Critic and They Break News Inc. They received judgment in the sum of circa GYD$52million and several injunctions preventing further defamation. The Guyanese Critic and They Break News Inc. appealed against this judgment and lost today 31′ March, 2025.
The Mohameds express appreciation to Renea Marcus and Malachi Griffith for their sterling work in submissions to the Honourable Court. They offer full gratitude to Allah and His Honour the Judge for the orders granted today. The Guyanese Critic was represented by Sanjeev Datadin.
