Khailan Vitalis, the first athlete to set a new national record for Saint Lucia this year, delivered another standout performance last weekend, breaking his own men’s 110m hurdles record.
Vitalis’ run of 13.83 seconds at the Jo Meaker Classic and Multi on Saturday, with a wind speed of 1.8 metres per second, was his second time under 14 seconds.
Vitalis, who turns 22 this year, opened the outdoor season with runs of 14.15 at the 97th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, and 14.07 (-1.3) at the Texas Tech Masked Rider Open. His latest outing at West Texas A&M University earned him fourth place overall, behind event winner Andre Harris of Odessa (13.70), Ashton Turner of UT Tyler (13.73), and unattached athlete Denim Rogers (13.73).
Vitalis, a sophomore at South Plains College, is already preparing for his next move when he completes his studies in Levelland, Texas. An alumnus of Entrepot Secondary School in Saint Lucia and Kingston College in Jamaica, he is excited about the next leg of his career journey.
He has some unfinished business yet at his current stop. After breaking the Texas school record for the 60m hurdles indoors earlier this year, Vitalis has set his sights on Daryl Burgess’ run of 13.46 from 2005. He will also be keen to get into the low 13s this year, which could put him in the frame for the World Championships in Tokyo.
