Kaieteur News- A 46-year-old driver was placed on $30,000 bail on Wednesday when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to damage of property and assault charges.
The defendant, Joel Dear of Lot 111 Miles, Mahdia, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty, who read the two charges.
It is alleged that Dear, on April 13, 2025, at Alexander Street Kitty, Georgetown, assaulted his ex-partner, Jeanette James. He also maliciously damaged one Samsung cellular phone valued at 35,000, property of James, on the same day at the same address.
He pleaded not guilty to the two charges.
Dear told the court that he and James were friends and were seeing each other for nine months before he was accused of the offence.
The prosecution objected to bail, stating that James and the defendant shared a close relationship and resided at the same address. They added that in her statement, she revealed that at the time of the incident, they were at a hotel when the defendant started to verbally abuse her.
Magistrate McGusty released Dear on $10,000 bail for the assault charge and $20,000 for the damage of property charge. The matter was adjourned until May 14, 2025.
