Kaieteur News- Dem boys seh de school close now, and fuh the first time in months, some people actually see de road again. Yuh cud even hear yuhself tink when yuh driving. De traffic ease up — not disappear, just ease up, like a fat man unbuckling he belt after a big plate ah cook-up.
But leh we talk plain. Is two week of lil breeze in de morning, and then boom! All hell gon bruk loose again when dem school open. Every morning turn into a episode of Survivor: East Bank Edition. People ducking and weaving, minibuses bouncing off potholes like they in a rally, and pickney crammed in de backseat half-asleep, trying fuh eat breakfast, tie shoelace and say prayers — all at once.
Dem boys seh is nah fair. Is nah fair fuh children to be waking up before de sun even get out of it blanket, just fuh beat traffic. Is nah fair fuh lil ones to be rubbing eye and dragging bag bigger than demself to ketch a ride at 5:30am just to reach school by 8.
Somebody got to come up wid a plan. And dem boys seh now is de time! While de school out and de roads get a lil breathing space, de big ones in charge should sit down and come up wid a real traffic plan — not one dem pick out from Google or borrow from a city dat got subway and escalator every corner.
Stagger school times? Try park-and-ride? Use school buses? Open up dem school gates early so children nah blocking up de road? Something! Anything!
Dem boys seh yuh can’t keep punishing de youth dem fuh poor planning. Is de future yuh punishing, and yuh can’t build a bright future when de whole next generation sleeping in class ‘cause dem deh in traffic before even de dog start barking.
Tek de next two weeks and do something smart fuh once. And leh de children sleep in till at least cock crow.
