Springer, Austin, Hinckson read to retain CARIFTA titles

Kaieteur Sports- As Guyana sets its sights on regional glory at this year’s CARIFTA Games this weekend, the spotlight will shine brightly on three of the country’s brightest stars; Tianna Springer, Malachi Austin, and Athaleyha Hinckson.

The trio will be among the 42-member Guyanese contingent competing from April 19–21 at the Haseley Crawford Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago.
With gold medals under their belts from last year’s Games, Springer, Austin, and Hinckson will look to defend their titles and further etch their names in Caribbean athletics history.
Springer, widely regarded as the Caribbean’s top junior 400m sprinter, will be going for her third consecutive CARIFTA Games gold medal.
After storming to victory in the U17 category in 2023 and again in the U20 division last year, the University of Georgia-bound athlete enters the Championships with an unblemished CARIFTA record and a reputation to uphold.
Austin, another standout and an LSU recruit, will also feature on the opening day of competition.
The reigning U20 400m champion returns to the track with momentum and confidence as he aims to repeat his golden performance and add to an already impressive resume.
Athaleyha Hinckson, the U17 100m champion, will be in action in the Girl’s U20 100m on the opening day of the CARIFTA Games.
Joining them is Hinckson who made headlines last year by winning the U17 100m title, a historic moment for Guyana.
Now back and stronger than ever, Hinckson has also joined LSU’s ranks and is ready to showcase her growth in the sprint events.
Guyana will also field several promising athletes on Day One, including Shaquan Shepherd (U17 400m), Kaidon Persaud (U20 400m), Angel Jeffery (U17 100m), Jonathan Richards (U20 100m), Skylar Charles (U20 100m), and Adessa Albert (U20 100m).
Malachi Austin will be hunting another 400M title at this year’s CARIFTA Games.
At last year’s CARIFTA Games, Guyana achieved its best-ever medal haul, securing four gold medals through Springer, Austin, Hinckson, and the 4x400m Mixed Relay team.
Silver medals came courtesy of Hinckson in the Girls’ U17 200m and Persaud in the Boys’ U17 800m. Attoya Harvey claimed bronze in the 3000m, while the U20 4x400m Relay team also finished third. (Rawle Toney)
