$107M farm-to-market road for Salem, Region 3

Kaieteur News – The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), an agency under the Ministry of Agriculture, will be constructing a $107 million farm-to-market road in the agriculture community of Salem, Region Three.
This is according to information provided by the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office. Following the national bidding process, the agency revealed on its website that it has awarded the contract to 4N Hardware Store Inc. for $107,562,000.
The project is one of several the ministry is rolling out this year, geared at improving access to farmlands, an issue raised by farmers in other communities as well.
It was reported in the media that while engaging residents at the Leonora Track and Field facility earlier this month, President Irfaan Ali announced that some $50 billion has been set aside to transform all the farm-to-market access dams into all-weather roads in Region Three.
The initiative is aimed at reducing the cost of transportation, increasing efficiency, and reducing spoilage of produce.
The Department of Public Information had further reported that despite distributing over 1,000 agricultural leases in Region Three over the last four years, farmers remained affected by a lack of productive lands, underutilised existing lands and high production costs due to a lack of access.
Addressing this issue, President Ali noted that the government was conducting an audit of all the farm-to-market access dams in Region Three and will put aside massive resources to transform these dams.
“We are going to set aside $50 billion [in the initial phase] to [transform] all of those farms to market access dams – into all-weather, hard surface roads,” the article quoted the president.
It was also reported that by creating new access roads and infrastructure investments, approximately 75,000 acres of land will be unlocked.
