Ministry to provide new date for reopening of school for September term
Jun 18, 2025
Kaieteur News – With general and regional elections scheduled for September 1 later this year, Minister of Education, Priya Manikchand, said her ministry will announce a new date for the opening of schools for the 2025 September.
Initially, school was expected to be reopened on September 1, but with the critical elections in play, Minister Manickchand noted that a new date will be made available.
She provided the update on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the annual Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Fair, at the Arthur Chung Conference Center on Tuesday.
According to the minister, general and regional elections are important as they reinforce and refresh democracy. She noted that schools are usually used as polling stations.
“We are happy to give up the schools for that important purpose of allowing people to exercise their will, and there will be a change that will be announced later. We usually accommodate it,” the minister said.
She reassured the public that a smooth transition of the classrooms can be done, since it was done in the past with a national examination.
“In previous years, I believe it was 2015, we had election on one day and math exams the following day, and we were able to move into school that night, fix them back for exams and have the math exams sat by the entire country the following day. We are quite organised,” she noted.
