Dr James Knight

It is hot these days. It is always hot during our summer festival. But everyone has been feeling the extra heat in recent months. Imagine what it will be like out there in the carnival crowds, especially for those playing mas on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. The kind of heat that we have been experiencing can prove to be quite dangerous even to the healthiest of persons who find themselves exposed to the burning flames of the sun for several hours.

Beat the Heat

Leaving your skin exposed to the sun is dangerous, because your skin is where your body sends your blood to cool off and return to your internal organs to cool them down.  It’s not by chance that your skin colour may change significantly when you are hot. Your sweat is to cool the skin, and therefore the blood.

If the skin is too hot to cool down the blood, then the hot blood goes back in to damage your internal organs. So cover yourself with light fabrics of light colour, or use an umbrella or a broad hat.

If you are playing mas in the sun, according to your outfit or costume, you should be getting sprayed or sprinkled with water at frequent intervals. If you are a spectator, then find some safe shade if you find that you’re getting too hot. Your umbrella or broad hat might be all that you need.

Of course, you must have water to drink. Never be thirsty for more than half an hour. A sport drink would be even better. Coconut water is good. NOT A BEER OR OTHER ALCOHOLIC DRINK. NOT AN ENERGY DRINK. THOSE WILL MAKE YOUR SITUATION MORE DANGEROUS.  Be careful with your kidneys, heart, gut and brain.

Watch out for those around you. If anyone seems to be having sudden jerks or cramps; if anyone seems to be fainting. Get them to a cool spot, loosen their upper garments, sprinkle them with water and call for emergency medical help. Have a safe carnival.
