Pomeroon X1 beat Mabarum X1 last Sunday as ECB scouts for talents in Region 1

Pomeroon X1 defeated Mabaruma X1 by 45 runs last Sunday in Region 1 in a T20 friendly match. This was part of the Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) visit to Region 1 scouting for talented cricketers.

A few other matches were played as well including female participation. At Jungle ground, Pomeroon X1 rattled up a respectable 174-8 at the expiration of the 20-overs while Mabaruma X1 responded with 129 all out in the penultimate over.

Corey Jabbar led the way for the winning combination with an impressive 53 while he received solid support from Harold Demattos and Wayne Holder with 26 and 25 respectively. Chowtie and Shane, only names given, claimed two wickets apiece for Mabaruma X1.
When Mabaruma X1 batted, Shane returned with the bat to prove his all-round capability by hitting 49 and Chowtie also offering a brief fight with 21.

Jabbar, a genuine all-rounder, grabbed 2-14 from four off-spin overs and skipper and former Essequibo Inter-County Under-19 player Mukesh Singh also with two victims but he conceded 16 runs from his maximum four overs as well. Meanwhile, Vice-President of the ECB, Ernesto Demattos, stated that he was delighted to witness the action and also mentioned that the Region 1 area is blessed with a large number of talented cricketers.

He said that President of the ECB Deleep Singh initiated the idea to search for these young, aspiring cricketers in the Interior Area and developmental plans are definitely on its way. Demattos further declared that he was impressed with the support and the players showed a great degree of eagerness to play cricket more consistently.

Demattos, who is also the President of the Pomeroon Cricket Committee, expressed profound gratitude to the leader of the Guyana Cricket Board, Bissoondyal Singh for donating a quantity of gear to the various teams in Region 1 (Barima-Waini). He thanked Regional Executive Officer Mr. Seewchan for his assistance in making the trip to Region 1 a success, too. Demattos outlined that the grounds there are in good shape but there are loam pitches.

Orison Sealy, the Captain of Mabaruma was overwhelmed with the trip and thanked Demattos for bringing the teams and cricket gear. A return trip is also promised by Sealy to Region 2 in few weeks’ time. Trophies for the games were donated by Urie Alphonso, a cricket fanatic and businessman.

Public Relations Officer of the ECB, Basil Persaud, was also delighted with the turnout and he echoed similar sentiments to the sponsors and the teams for their participation. Persaud, a West Indies Masters player earlier this year in Sri Lanka, commented that there is abundance of talented players in Region 1. He promised to take cricket regularly there and help with the development.

Meanwhile, Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, was in Region 1 and he paid a visit to the venue to witness the action. Croal expressed elation with the attendance as well and told the organizers and the players of his government’s support for sports in Region 1.
