Barack Hussein Obama (I mentioned Hussein for the haters), was the last president to be voted in because of his likability. The last president who won an election because he gave America hope. Hope for a better future, for a better world; and the majority of Americans, and the world, embraced him. They weren’t voting against his opponent; they were voting for him. He promised hope and change, and was much more successful with the hope part than with the change. The most important thing that he did was to let everyone know that anything is possible, no matter who you are, where you come from, racially, socially, economically. And the people embraced him; black, white, Hispanic, Asian, the Indigenous, all embraced him and his message, and especially his message of hope for the future.
He was squeaky clean, perfect family, well-educated, charismatic, and had that aura of confidence, and that cool that disappeared back in the ‘60s with the Rat Pack. That swagger and bravado that is so rare these days. No drama Obama!
He was a good President; not a great one, in my opinion. Obamacare was his best achievement during his presidency, along with the capture and execution of Osama bin Laden. He tried too hard to get along, rather than to push through much needed reforms in government. He ceded too much power to the opposition because, like most Democrats, he was too nice and hoped for that conciliatory response from his adversaries that never came. The Republicans decided from his first day in office that they would oppose him, and even with his complete control of Congress, he was hampered by expectations of change, which again, never materialized.
His administration was devoid of scandal. He deported more undocumented immigrants than any of his predecessors or his successors, quietly and without drama. He made the world love America again, made Africa feel proud, made Europe comfortable, and tried, without much success, to keep dictators in line. He inherited one of the worst economies in 2009 and transformed it into a great success, which he passed on to TACO man. He retired gracefully, with class, and displayed a great understanding of the Constitution and all that this special document entails.
But he is also responsible, in my opinion, for the Trump presidency. He was elected by a majority of white Americans; but 8 years later, many of those people who voted for him voted for Donald Trump. I don’t get that, but it is what it is. During Obama’s presidency, the racist Trump began spreading lies and conspiracies about his birthplace. That he was alien, foreign, a Moslem, a fake. And a racist minority bought that story, not based on facts, but based on the idea that a black man, a black family should not be the face of America, should not be sleeping in the White House, night after night. He envied Obama because of his intellect, his looks, his swagger, his cool. Wat a ting!
It didn’t help that Hilary was the most despised person in America, by Republicans. It didn’t help that in some ways she took her victory for granted and neglected those swing states she needed most towards the end of the campaign. She also lacked the charismatic skills of the former game-show host and agitator. So, he eked out a slim victory that has changed America forever. But in my opinion, if Obama had not won in his bid for presidency, Trump would never have become president, nor would he have run. He awakened that half-dormant racism in many parts of America, and made promises he couldn’t keep, and has led us down this path to ignominy for the foreseeable future.
Every single day since he assumed his second term as president, Donald Trump has been on television. Every single day he lies to us, demeans us, sows hatred and division and distrust amongst us. He is trying to rid the country of minorities to make America White again. He breaks the law and scoffs at the idea of the ideals of the Constitution. He is lawless and heartless and vain. The first president who we don’t know what he really looks like; his face is covered in more makeup daily than all the makeup used by women in the Jewel. A thin-skinned charlatan and agitator.
We are all living in this dystopian, dysfunctional nightmare. A world that once respected us, now hates us. We have lost all the moral authority which we were so well-known for. We don’t have an independent Department of Justice or Commerce or Defense or any other institution. Everything is controlled by this wannabe, power-hungry ex-convict.
I blame Obama, inadvertently, for that!
