Dem Boys Seh, Features / Columnists

Kaieteur News – Long time, Cheddi seh, “Gimme a lil enamel cup.” He pick that cup because it humble, simple, and does hold just enough fuh poor people tea or a lil swank on a hot day. That cup was de symbol of de ordinary man. Yuh coulda see yuhself in that cup. Small but enough fuh share.

But today? Cup too small, bai. Oil money now so big it spilling over like black water in de trench when de kokers ain’t work. So de Pee Pee Pee Cee seh, “Nah man, forget de cup, bring out de oil drum!”

And who leff de oil drum? Exxon. Exxon tek de oil, tek de money, tek de shine, and leff de Pee Pee Pee Cee wid one empty drum beating like tassa at election rally.

Imagine that de cup weh use to symbolize simplicity done upgrade to a whole drum just fuh collect leff leff. From enamel cup to Exxon drum. From tea and swank to a hollow ting making noise when yuh beat it.

Dem boys seh is a perfect symbol. De cup use to full yuh belly. De drum only full yuh ears wid noise. And if yuh put yuh head inside, all yuh gon hear is echo. Same like de promises. People use to shout, “Vote fuh de Cup!” Now dem gon seh, “Vote fuh de Drum!” Because that is what lef. An empty container rattling down de road. Exxon tek de contents, PPP tek de container, and de people lef holding de handle.

Dem boys seh, once upon a time de cup did belong to everybody. Now de drum belong to Exxon. All de PPP Cee doing is borrowing it to make campaign music.

From cup to drum. From humble to hollow. From Cheddi to Exxon. Dem boys seh, watch carefully. When yuh see politicians turn cup into drum, yuh know is only hot air inside.

Talk half. Leff half.
