Kaieteur News – Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips and Bharrat Jagdeo were officially sworn in as Prime Minister and Vice President respectively on Monday at office of the President ceremony.
Both men previously served in the same roles during President Ali’s first term in office, from 2020 to 2025. Following the September 1 General and Regional Elections, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) declared on September 7 that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) had won the elections. President Ali was sworn in on Sunday at the State House in Georgetown. However, unlike his first term, the swearing-in of the Prime Minister and Vice President did not take place on the same day. Instead, both Phillips and Jagdeo were formally sworn in on Monday.
In his remarks, President Ali expressed his confidence in both men describing their appointments as the beginning of a series of key decisions aimed at continuing national development. “I am delighted to have just administered the oath of office to the Prime Minister and Vice President. These appointments represent the first of many in the public service and reflect our commitment to placing the reins of our nation’s development in the most capable hands, hands that have been tried, tested, and proven in the eyes of public service,” he stated.
President Ali praised Prime Minister Phillips for his leadership during the previous term, highlighting his strength and effective management. “In those years, he served as a pillar of strength and confidence. He handled an expansive portfolio not just with efficiency but with a masterful command that instilled confidence across the government and throughout the nation,” Ali said.
Reaffirming his trust in Phillips, the President added, “I am supremely confident that, as Prime Minister, he will not only continue his exemplary service but will surpass his own distinguished record.”
Turning to Vice President Jagdeo, President Ali commended his lifelong dedication to Guyana’s development. “He has devoted a lifetime to the socio-economic and political well-being of our nation. In my first term I came to rely on his expert and wise counsel as my vice president. His grasp for complex issues, his foresight in policy making and profound understanding of both local dynamics and global economics are nothing short of extraordinary,” President Ali stated. Ali concluded by emphasising the strength of the team formed by the reappointments. “Together, these two exemplary gentlemen represent a powerful fusion of strength. They represent a unity of purpose and a diversity of skills that will support my government and the rest of my cabinet,” he said.
