(Kaieteur News) – Yuh ever notice how people does dress nowadays when dem going to funeral? Lawd, if yuh nah careful, yuh coulda think yuh walk into a fashion show. Back in de day, it used to simple—black and white, plain clothes, respectful. If yuh did see somebody in colour, people would be whispering, “Eh heh, he ain’t have proper funeral clothes, or he just come from work.” That was it. But now? Anything goes!

Some people come looking like dem just step out of some boutique catalogue. Yuh have woman in bright yellow with accessories to match, and man in red tie and blue pants—oh, yuh know, the one who think he’s a runway model. And dem shoes? Yuh woulda think dem going to a wedding reception! De days when people did dress humble for funeral done gone. Now, de more flashy, de better. Some people even buying special outfit just for de funeral, like dem want to make sure people notice dem before dem even see de body.

And de ting is, sometimes yuh can’t even tell if yuh at a funeral or a party. People laughing and taking selfies while de family still crying inside. Dem boys seh, when did mourning turn into a fashion competition? Yuh coulda swear de woman in green and gold think she on “Project Runway: Guyana Edition.” And de men? Lawd, de men in dem bright polo shirts and new sneakers… “Eh, yuh nah feel bad that de man gone?”

Even the little children catching fashion fever. Yuh see dem with sparkly shoes, little dresses with sequins, looking like dem ready fi carnival, not funeral. And some granny with her big hat and fancy bag, people gawking, whispering, “She ain’t here to mourn, she here to show off.”

De thing is, we changing as people. Funeral nah just bout paying respect no more. It turn into an event fi show off yuh style and yuh new outfit. Dem boys seh, if yuh go a funeral today, better check yuh closet and yuh bank account, because what used to be black and white, now a parade of colours, glitter, and style. Even de dead woulda be vex, because everybody looking at who wear best outfit instead of saying goodbye.
