HomeCARIBBEAN NEWSTesting the limits!

If there is one thing that last Tuesday’s elections in the United States tells us, and that none of us can ignore, it is that the voters will only put up with so much. I see the similarities in both the governments in America and in Belize, in their attitudes toward governance. Whether it is winning a landslide mandate or by a shoestring, the voters will only allow you to go so far before they decide that you are not living up to your promises, the ones that got you elected. Donald Trump’s percentage of votes over Kamala Harris was 1.5 %; he won by a shoestring and called it a major mandate. The PUP blew away the opposition by such a large margin that it was unquestionable that they received a huge mandate.

And now both Trump and the Briceño administrations are testing the limits of their power. They are both trying to override the will of the people, whether it is through unlawful and illegal actions to achieve their goals, or through misinformation and corruption to fulfill their goals.

We have a problem in Belize, where a major coverup is happening in plain sight of every single one of us: the kidnapping and deportation of a citizen to another country by police officers, with the apparent blessings of the PUP administration. The Prime Minister has not only stymied efforts for an impartial investigation of this lawless, this unconstitutional act, (I’m assuming it’s unconstitutional, since it is the government’s duty to protect each and every citizen), but also has arrogantly dismissed the press and their concerns over this act of terrorism, which should be troubling to all of us.

Then there is the stealing of OPP (other peoples’ properties) all over the Jewel. Whether it’s through bureaucratic or ministerial means, it is blatant corruption nonetheless. The awarding of unfulfilled contracts to cronies, not the best qualified; the nepotism, which has been normalized by the PUDP’s — all corrupt! There are many more examples of lawlessness, of corruption, but those mentioned are the most glaring, in the public eye right now.

In America, Donald Trump’s regime got a wake-up call from the voters last week. They repudiated his heavy-handed, heartless and dangerous policies for almost every aspect of his governance—the economy, immigration, tariffs, justice, health, welfare—and over his illegal attacking of unknown vessels in the southern Caribbean and on the Pacific Ocean! He claims that they are drug traffickers without offering any proof of those accusations.

The Republicans are underwater right now, partially due to the longest government shutdown in history, and because of their obeisance to the Crimson King! Americans are less patient than Belizeans are. They throw out the bums as quickly as possible, while in the Jewel we have to wait 5 years to rid ourselves of the parasites, no matter party affiliation.

My predictions have been terrible lately, but I believe that next year the Democrats will reclaim the House and perchance the Senate. You mess with our pocketbooks and our freedoms, and it’s bye, bye, m*therf***ers.

Sometimes people come to their senses, and in spite of a weak opposition, they throw out those who are abusing the privileges that they were given by a populace that expected more, much more.

Politicians tend to believe that they will always be in power; it has been that way since forever. They become caught up in their own delusions of invincibility, until like Roberto Duran, the voters respond, “no mas!”

Can’t wait for the AI politicians. They won’t have to worry about getting rich or growing old or elections. They will just govern forever and ever and ever, Amen.

Regarding my imperfect predictions, either Gavin Newsom or Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, will be elected president in 2028; and then after that, it will be the time of the machines. I’ll be back! Wat a ting!
