I am saddened today, to learn of the transition of a great hero of Barbados, National Hero, The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Aubrun Sobers, the greatest cricketer the world has known, and a gift to the world of cricket, directly from the little island of Barbados, my island of birth.
But almost ten years ago, I was privileged along with many others, to be present at Lords Cricket Ground (entering into the Long Room), the Mecca home of cricket, to celebrate Sir Garfield’s birthday and Barbados’s Golden Anniversary (50yrs) of Independence. Needles to say I had the goose pimples on that occasion, but it was a privilege like many others to meet with Sir Gary and share in his birthday celebrations and 50 yrs of Barbados Independence.
Sir Garfield, you have given so much to Barbados, its people and also to world of cricket, but yet you have remained ever so humbled and respectful of your fellow human beings. You have not allowed prestige or the glory you have gained to put you on a pedestal above your fellow human beings.
Sir Garfield Sobers, you are my true hero and one of a kind as well as one who should definitely be placed on a pedestal for all to emulate.
You’ve given it your all Sir Garfield, now rest peacefully in the arms of the Angels of our Almighty forever more. Your name and your legacy will survive the many generations to follow.
