Govt. to spend $350M to enhance fishing activity in Mon Repos

Govt. to spend $350M to enhance fishing activity in Mon Repos Sep 07, 2024 Court Stories, Features / Columnists, News Kaieteur News – Fisherfolk at Mon Repos North, East Coast Demerara (ECD), will soon experience enhanced working conditions, as the government plans to allocate over $350 million towards enhancing their facilities. This announcement was made by Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, on Friday during a land title distribution exercise for residents there. This intervention stems from a previous visit to the area by President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali. “Over $350 million will be expended to enhance your landing site. We will build a ramp for the boats and fix the entire revetment there. A shed will also be put in place to provide sufficient shade,” the minister stated.   The measures are expected to impact approximately 100 boats operating at the location. The minister also mentioned that stalls would be constructed near the landing site, ensuring consumers have a smoother shopping experience and fisherfolk can sell at better prices. “What we experienced is that the fishing boats are selling to the trucks, and when they go to the markets, people are paying double the price. Going forward, at these landing sites, we will be building stalls and we are encouraging people to come to the landing sites to purchase fish so that the fisherfolk can get a better price for the fish and the consumer can enjoy a better price as well,” Minister Mustapha explained.   Fishing is one of the main economic activities in the North Mon Repos area, supporting approximately 500 persons. During the president’s visit, he also pledged that an access road would be constructed. Additionally, the dredging of the waterway in the area is also in the pipeline to address the challenges currently faced by boats due to shallow waters. Superstition runs things in Guyana!

Superstition runs things in Guyana! Sep 07, 2024 Dem Boys Seh, Features / Columnists, News Kaieteur News – Guyanese people believe in science, sure—but not too much science. After all, who needs evidence when you’ve got a whole bag of superstitions passed down through generations? Forget about the stock market or salary increases, the real money forecast comes when the palm of your hand starts itching. They say if it’s the right hand, your wallet’s about to get heavy. But if it’s the left hand, get ready to lose money faster than a politician loses promises. Some folks even give it a good rub, just to speed things along. Now, don’t get me started on brooms. In any other country, a broom is just for cleaning, but in Guyana, it’s a tool for ruining your love life. Accidentally sweep someone’s foot? Congrats, you just condemned them to a lifetime of bachelorhood. No wedding bells, no cake, nothing! If your family wants you married, they better keep the broom far away from you or risk a scandal. And heaven help you if anyone dares to jump over your feet. Do you enjoy your current height? Well, not for long if someone decides to leapfrog over you—you’ll stop growing! Apparently, gravity just gives up after that. Makes you wonder how tall Guyanese might be if they weren’t dodging broomsticks and jumpers. Oh, and here’s a tip: don’t sweep your house after 6:00 p.m. unless you’re actively trying to sweep away your riches. Just wait until the morning; your broom will understand. But perhaps the best advice is for when you pass a cemetery—don’t point! If you do, your fingers are doomed to rot unless you bite them like a hungry vampire. Science may have its place, but let’s be real—superstition runs the show in Guyana. Do you know of any others that actually work? Talk half. Leff half! Related Similar Articles

Fired up Warriors seeking third straight win against home team Kings

Fired up Warriors seeking third straight win against home team Kings  Sep 07, 2024 Sports Guyana Amazon Warriors are in peak form heading into tonight’s battle. 2024 Caribbean Premier League… GAW vs. SLK Kaieteur Sports – A fired up Guyana Amazon Warriors team will be looking to extend their mini unbeaten streak, as they will be gunning what could be their third straight win tonight when they lock horns with the home team, St. Lucia Kings. After shattering records in the last match against the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots, where over 400 runs were scored; the champs will be looking to apply similar pressure when they square off against a star-studded Kings team in their backyard. Warriors batting have been on point from jump, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Shimron Hetmyer, Keemo Paul and makeshift opener Kevin Sinclair, all looking dangerous following last match heroics. The champs racked up 266 in the last game after Gurbaz and Hetmyer cut loose with fifties, with additional impetus coming from their seam bowling all-rounders in Dwaine Pretorius and Raymon Reifer. With their spin lot of Gudakesh Motie, Junior Sinclair and skipper Imran Wasim all being solid batsmen down the order, the Warriors will want their big two in Shai Hope and Azam Khan to make up for their misfires in the last game. One slight worry for the Warriors will be their bowling options, especially with Sinclair struggling in the last game and their front-line lot all conceding over 30 runs despite picking up wickets. Paul, Pretorius, Tahir and Motie will more than likely shoulder the majority of the responsibility, while Reifer and both Sinclairs will rotate duties in between spells. The Kings, having won their last game will be entering tonight’s game full of confidence, especially with veteran opener and skipper Faf du Plessis already hitting form. Wrist-spinner Noor Ahmad will be the X-Factor for the Kings. Along with his opening partner Johnson Charles, and a dangerous middle-order led by Bhanuka Rajapaska, Akeem Auguste and wicket-keeper Tim Seifert all finding form, St. Lucia will fancy their chances with the bat. The Kings also have a slightly better bowling attack than the Warriors, with fast-bowlers Alzarri Joseph and South African David Wiese alongside spinners Khary Pierre, Roston Chase in the mix. One equalizer will be the Afghanistan wrist-spinner Noor Ahmad, who will be a massive threat to the Warriors batsmen. With South Africans Wiese and Pretorius are both familiar to each other, the West Indies players will be involved in their own battle; with the most intriguing match-up being the timeline battle of the two leg-spinners in 45 year-old Tahir and 19 year-old Ahmad. Match bowls off from 19:00h at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, St. Lucia. (C. ROSS) Related Similar Articles

Pres Ali intervention: Camptown Football facility rehabilitation work to move up to speed Sep 07, 2024 Sports President Ifraan Ali (center) engages with residents and stakeholders at the Camptown Football ground. Kaieteur Sports – Earlier this year, concerns were raised to President Irfaan Ali regarding the deteriorating state of the Camptown Football Ground, a once-popular venue for grassroots and club football in Georgetown. In response, President Ali made an unofficial visit to the Campbellville-based facility on Tuesday to assess the ongoing work as part of the nationwide sports facility upgrade initiative. Having initiated the project back in April following appeals from local residents, President Ali returned to the site to accelerate efforts to make the venue functional as soon as possible. His visit was initially intended for the community, but his passion for sports led him to address the concerns of those who frequently use the facility, particularly for football. After hearing their feedback, he instructed Minister of Sport Charles Ramson Jr. to ensure specific amenities were added to the renovation plans. Current state of the ground at the Camptown Football Facility. The President also set a six-week deadline for completing the upgrades at the ground, stating, “We’re close to completion, but there’s still a lot of work to do to get the ground fully ready. We want everything finished within this timeframe.” Outlining the tasks to be completed, President Ali said, “We’ll finish the fence, address the drainage, and complete the playing field. I want all of this done in the next six weeks. We’ll break it down and get it done.” During the visit, President Ali also announced additional improvements, saying, “We’ll add two more pavilions like the one already here. One will be elevated, allowing space for washroom and changing room facilities underneath. We’ll install lighting and nets behind the goalposts. All of this will be done within six weeks to make the ground fully operational.” Related Similar Articles
