Duo wanted for murder of Kuru Kururu man Oct 20, 2024 News Kaieteur News – The Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Saturday issued wanted bulletins for two men, who are allegedly involved in the murder of 61-year-old Aubrey Richardson known as ‘Gooby’ on August 24, 2024. Samuel Browne Antwan Sampson The wanted men have been identified as 20-year-old Antwan Sampson and 23-year-old Samuel Browne. Sampson’s last known address is Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, while Browne’s last address is Kaneville, Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD). Police are asking persons with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects to make contact on 227-1149, 225-8196, 227-1611, 268-2329, 226-405, 225-6978 and 225-8196 or the nearest police station. Dead: Aubrey Richardson Kaieteur News had reported that on August 24, 2024 Richardson was shot during an alleged robbery at ‘Sattie Shop’ located in Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.  He had left his Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke-Linden Highway residence at approximately 20:30hrs in the company of someone known to be his friend to go to the shop. He was rushed to the hospital where he spent almost two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) before he died on September 5 2024. A post-mortem examination done on Richardson’s body revealed that he died of septic shock due to injuries caused by a single gunshot. ‘It’s foolish to think Exxon lopsided deal was made better with local content law’ Oct 20, 2024 News Kaieteur News- Economist and advisor to the People’s Nation Congress Reform (PNCR) on oil and gas Elson Low told the Kaieteur News in an invited comment, that it would be foolish of the government to think that the lopsided 2016 Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) governing the lucrative Stabroek Block offshore Guyana was improved by the Local Content Act and the Gas to Energy project, saying that both would have existed even if the oil contract terms of itself were made better. Economist and Advisor to the PNCR, Elson Low. “Is Jagdeo really peddling the notion that if the Stabroek PSA were improved Guyanese could not be involved in any local content opportunities? That’s ridiculous as a wide range of countries have local content provisions. Additionally, the Gas to Energy project is not the brainchild of Jagdeo, but the Coalition government began preparation for that project. Is he saying that having witnessed the Coalition’s good work he abandoned any plans to renegotiate?” Low questioned. Reminding citizens that pre-elections the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) made a commitment to renegotiate the contract he also highlighted that Guyanese should not allow the Vice president (VP) to “confuse the nation about the Gas to Energy Plant.” He argued that no matter what improvements are made to the contract efforts would still have been made to make use of the country’s natural gas resources for the production of electricity and other products. “That is totally separate from the question of improving the Stabroek PSA,” Low said. At a recent press conference, the VP while admitting that neighbouring Suriname has better fiscal terms than Guyana said that the former administration is to be blamed for the lopsided 2016 oil deal. He boasted that his government fixed the deal by addressing the non-fiscal terms so that Guyanese can benefit more from the sector. “We sought to fix this by getting more benefits from the contract through the Local Content Law, the Gas-to-Energy project so that we can claim other non-fiscal benefits from the contract and we have had Exxon agree with that from the time we got into office, but this is great and I am happy for Suriname, very happy for them they have worked very hard at this,” he reasoned. Oct 20, 2024 Editorial Editorial… Kaieteur News – Most Guyanese are set for a joyous holiday season, should all go well with the cash grant distribution.  It encountered trouble: definition of ‘household.’  So, $200,000 changed to $100,000, and included all those over 18 as of January 1, 2024.  More recipients, happy ones, means more potential voters.  Then, it was supposed to be mainly from the GPL database, but now that seems off the table, with new identification-based criteria. Whatever the distribution format, disposable income and spending power, two closely related Guyanese challenges, would enjoy a boost.  But is this about providing relief for suffering Guyanese?  Or does this $100,000 cash grant function as voting incentive, a poorly disguised piece of elections sleight of hand? Guyanese poor in many locations have been crying out for an ease to their distressing cost-of-living circumstances for years, with those pleas all falling on deaf ears in the PPPC Government.  Citizens took note of oil money withdrawals and where those funds went, who got, who didn’t.  The hungry in Guyana formed the bulk of those who didn’t, were left to their own devices.  First, they were reminded of how much the government had done for them through subsidies, increases in tax thresholds and pensions, among other helpful efforts.  Though those were so, they were not enough, which meant that hungry Guyanese were staying hungry, growing hungrier.  But, who in the PPPC Government had the time and patience to give a listening ear to the struggles of Guyanese poor?  Then second, the leaders in the government were too busy listening to their own wisdom: they are working diligently to manage inflation.  More relief funds placed in the hands of Guyanese would fuel inflationary pressures, which could get out of control quickly.  And so it was that the fear of inflation, pretended or real, served as the basis to deny a helping hand to citizens during their difficult times. Third, to add insult to injury, the PPPC Government then introduced what was both stomach-cringing and hurtful: official statistics.  In brief, the prices for basic food items are at healthy levels, viz., affordable levels.  The increases in food prices were negligible, in the low single-digit range.  There was this disconnect on the ground, as experienced by citizens.  Because the prices for essential food items and aggregated statistics that the government was putting out could not have been more apart.  So far apart, as to be obscene, a cruel laugh in the face of those who couldn’t feed their families properly.  With President Ali’s initial grand $200,000 address, concerns about inflation vanished.  Obviously, President Ali has some powers that are still unknown to most locals.  The way that we at this publication see this is that there is day-to-day economics, then there is election season economics.  Money is found, more now, the speech is finalized, and the needed helping hand is suddenly delivered, like a friend from nowhere.  The Opposition dismissed the original $200,000 cash grant as ‘elections gimmickry.’  We call it for what could be much closer to the truth: PPPC Government elections trickery. Fourth, Vice President Jagdeo informed the nation that the cash grant distribution could take five months.  The use of “one-off” is repeated in the government’s cash grant messages, and when coupled with the five-month timeframe, Jagdeo could be subtly signaling Guyanese that he has delivered, and the rest (right voting) is now up to them.  The complaints of those who could have been left out have been heard, which is what led to the second presidential announcement involving the revision from $200,000 per household to $100,000 for anyone over 18 years old.  This has elections fever at high temperatures.  With the distribution now reduced to $100,000 per person (18 at a minimum), and ID card or valid passport coming into play, this is beginning to look more like more than Christmas.  It is now looking more like the old cash in white envelopes.  When distributions in Guyana must be done face-to-face, the opportunity is provided for close quarter negotiations and individual self-enrichment.  What it will be is still up in the air presently.  Overall, there is the economics of the cash grant, then regular practices and, naturally, the old PPPC Government politics. Oct 20, 2024 News Kaieteur News- The University of Guyana said it supports quality tuition-free education as government announced that fees will be removed from January 2025. In a statement on Saturday, the university said it is obliged to clarify the current situation in response to the plethora of calls in regard to the recent and ongoing public high-level pronouncements in Guyana on the question of free tuition at the University of Guyana. “The University of Guyana welcomes and supports quality free tuition at the University and wherever it can be sustainably offered in our country. The University has made no other determinations subsequent to those already made in regard to this year’s graduation planned for November 7th to 9th and November 16th,2024. However, recent developing conditions surrounding interpretations by students and others about free tuition has produced some conditions which must be addressed urgently.” Some of these matters concerning implementation modalities and the paying over of fees owed by prospective graduates and continuing students to the University are being assiduously addressed by the appropriate offices of the University and the Government of Guyana. “This is so that all eligible students can graduate on time and the operations of the University for which fees have always been needed can continue uninterrupted until January 2025 when this first semester officially ends.”  According to UG in support of the Government of Guyana’s generous promises of free tuition, it has extended itself for the past four years, by allowing thousands of students to attend and successfully complete their studies without fully paying fees. “Therefore, there could be no routine reason why the graduations of students already planned would be withheld by the same University which has nurtured them for all this time.” However, UG said revenue from fees cover more than 50% of the University of Guyana’s operating expenses and are always desperately needed towards the end of the year. “The University of Guyana therefore wishes to assure its stakeholders that all possible avenues are being pursued to ensure the operations and best interests of everyone, most importantly those of our 3500 prospective graduates are satisfied in the coming week.” Related Similar Articles

Moot Court Guyana launches first International Law Mooting Competition Oct 20, 2024 News Kaieteur News – The Moot Court Guyana (MCG) officially kicked off the 2024/2025 academic year on Friday by launching its first mooting competition with its International Law Mooting Competition (the ILMC). The winning team: Fabian Green, Senior Counsel (speaking), and Raheem Blair, Researcher (centre), and Juneeda Jeffers, Junior Counsel The MCG is a student-led organization operating within the Department of Law at the Faculty of Social Studies of the University of Guyana (UG). MCG is committed to enhancing the advocacy skills of LL.B students by providing opportunities for participation in debates, mooting competitions, impromptu speaking contests, and various other advocacy-related activities. According to a statement issued by MCG, the moot scenarios which were drafted by Lecturer of Department of Law at UG, Neville Bissember raised questions of international dispute resolution under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (“UNCLOS”), and international humanitarian and human rights law, and public international law issues such as immunity. During the competition, six teams faced off in three intense rounds. At the conclusion of the third round, team two, consisting of Fabian Green (Senior Counsel), Juneeda Jeffers (Junior Counsel), and Raheem Blair (Researcher), emerged victorious with an impressive score of 83.5 out of a possible 100 points. Team one, made up of Shamar Sukhu (Senior Counsel), John Applewhite-Hercules (Junior Counsel), and Anelia Bacchus (Researcher), secured second place with a score of 78.5 out of 100 points. MCG said in the statement, “Juneeda Jeffers was named the overall best advocate for her outstanding performance.” Importantly, the two teams will compete against each other in the final round of the competition, scheduled for October 25, 2024. To this end, in his closing remarks, Justice Peter Hugh, who served as the judge for the mooting competition, commended the participants for their courage in participating in the competition, and encouraged further participation to enhance their advocacy skills. “MCG continues to foster participation in these mooting activities as part of its commitment to developing the advocacy skills of every LL.
