Annual National Draughts Championship starts Sunday Oct 18, 2024 Sports Guyana Beverage Inc. supplies thirst quenchers… Kaieteur News – The Annual National Draughts Association Championship begins on Sunday, October 20th and continues for three consecutive Sundays. The games are scheduled to play at the Transport Sports club pavilion. The first game on Sunday would involve the ‘B’ Class players. This includes junior and beginners. However, the top five finishers would qualify to play in the senior category the following Sunday. The current B champion is Esan Anderson. If Anderson wins again he would qualify to move up to the senior level. Navin Meghbarran is another contender for the title. Aubrey Rowe and Dr. Ivor English are expected to give a good account for themselves, while teacher Ramsagar Singh is one to watch. The games are scheduled to start at 10.00 am sharp. Entrance fee is $700 per person which includes a snack. Georgetown Draughts Coordinator Mr. Steve Bacchus is delegated to referee the day’s event, while Mr. Jiaram is the chief Arbitrator. Guyana Beverage Inc. has stepped in once again to supply their Turbo, Oasis and other beverages for the players. Ali!  Aali!  Aalee!  He’s the greatest Oct 18, 2024 Features / Columnists, News, The GHK Lall Column Hard Truths by GHK Lall… Kaieteur News – The Romans knew about ceremony -look what they did to those poor gladiators and hapless Christians.  The British know about pageantry -just watch when they crown a new king.  But who knows about fanfare and trumpet blasts better than the PPP and a leader named Ali?  If ever there was a man riding into town on a white horse and to the rescue of the Guyanese people, it is Excellency Mohamed Irfaan Ali.  Ali! Ali! Ali!  Who’s the greatest, all 200,000 worth?  Finally, Guyanese get value from their oil money, and it is scheduled to begin immediately.  Indeed, it is gold, but the glitter is on the paler side of glory. Thunderous applause greeted the president’s pronouncements.  One provision after another for the people.  Guyanese have been kicked while on the ground for so long that even a nudge from the toe feels like a great, big, hand up.  For homes with bare cupboards, their empty pots and plates, $60 billion is a big deal.  Hail to the headman for hitting one for six all the way over past cow corner.  To the drained and strained NIS, another $10 of the biggest, brightest bills. Guyana must be an oil country, and Irfaan Ali must be the man in charge of the money.  From tight continence to overindulgence.  From pittance to halfpence ($200,000 [now $100,000] makes for a sweet ringing jingle) and a bigger bill for the treasury.  Ali will be back.  Is an election campaign built, successful, on one cash donation only?  Yes! The donations are going the other way today.  The history of elections of Guyana is that everything becomes upside-down.  Neighbours transform into Neanderthals, friends into foes.  So, it follows that politicians come bearing gifts.  What could be bigger and better than $100,000 cash in these hard times.  It has all the rich smoothness of a Rolls-Royce.  Ali!  Ali!  Ali!  Are Guyanese the proud citizens, blessed to be in the right place at the right time, i.e., in an oil producing country, or what?  With the right leader doing the right things for the right reason?  It is Ali to the franchisee: remember the cup.  Remember the cup from which the 100 nice ones came.  Will Guyanese fall for this magic? Let the good times begin.  Immediately, as was said by Excellency Ali.  I wonder if that has anything to do with whispers of the discriminatory in the distribution of oil patrimony to selected PPP constituencies (farmers, others).  Plus, what has so far been largely about the budgetary shady.  Every household first, now every adult, it will be.  The wrangling and squabbling came on what is the definition of household just got solved.  The young people, the largest demographic in Guyana got their calls answered.  Those citizens who first saw a red haze will now see some green bills.  Why worry people, Guyanese have Ali and that is the end of any controversy, any stink and dutty story. He waves his presidential wand and magic automatically happens.  Now, it’s $100,000 for all adults.  Count more votes for the cup.  It is why I love this country.  There is the money machine, and there is the voting machinery, with which the PPP has now overtaken the PNC.  How many Guyanese see-through what started out as relief, then transformed into a leadership and political farce, and which now holds the promise of a great fraud in the making. In thinking of this $100,000 cash grant, the conclusion was always that there is something about the showman in Irfaan Ali.  The timing is there, and so is the flair for the moment.  The man did walk with his own marching band and parliamentary cheerleading squad, didn’t he with the $200 grand?  But now he has outdone himself by spiraling into a vaudevillian throwing caution to the wind.  The same people who managed to square the circle (kept inflation in check [well, at least, the official statistical side]) while prices are riotous in the streets, are now going for broke.  To repeat: when Christmas is gone and the money is done, Guyanese gon get bun: the new price levels will not be going down. I call that politically orchestrated and induced inflation.  What say thou, Jagdeo-ji?  In a flash, with the stroke of a presidential pen, Ali and Jagdeo (and Singh) went from the incremental ($25,000) to the monumental ($200,000 for each household), then to the sublime ($100,000 for all).  Why take a chance with low gravy gradualism in an election year, when all the marbles are in play, and a bigger five-year payday is the inviting, mouthwatering prize that stands beyond 2025.  It is better to make a splash and give a stash of their own cash back to the Guyanese people.  Call it the anticipated return on invested capital, political leadership capital.  Despite “one-off” chatter, I still believe one more could be in the making. What Exxon can’t do for Guyana, the PPP Government of President Ali can do for Guyanese.  Ali!  Ali!  Ali!  Ai-yai-yai!  Say it loud.  Say it clear.  Say it repeatedly.  Who is the greatest, if not Guyana’s own Mohamed Ali! Kaieteur News – Over the next two days, this oil-rich nation of Guyana will have another opportunity to showcase itself as capable of hosting international sporting events when the curtains are raised to signal the start of the 2024 CAC Body Building & Fitness Championships, at the National Cultural Centre. This pronouncement was made by Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle, who was present at yesterday’s Press Conference to formally announce the hosting of the 2024 c/ships. Ninvalle, who represented the Government through its affiliates the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport and the National Sports Commission (NSC), shortly after welcoming the officials and athletes, confirmed the Government’s support for the event. “We are pleased to be associated with the championships,” informing that they (Government) are the biggest contributor, while adding that it is a clear indicator of their continued commitment towards the development of sports and athletes in this country. The experienced administrator revealed that the Ministry and the NSC have been involved in the planning of the event from ‘jump street’, holding daily meetings with the Guyana Body Building & Fitness Federation (GBBFF) in an effort to ensure that all systems are in place for a smooth execution of the c/ships. Also, present at the occasion were President of the GBBFF Keavon Bess, Treasurer of the CAC FBC Edward Malone, Vice-President of the CACFBC Roger Boyce, Twins Manufacturing representative Noah Ferouz and GBBFF Organising Secretary Videsh Sookram. Bess in his brief remarks first thanked all the sponsors that included the Government, Guyana Olympic Association, Twins Manufacturing, Fitness Express, Camille’s Academy, Bounty Farms Ltd, Republic Bank and all the other entities that contributed to the c/ships. He then welcomed all the visitors and urged that that they put on a fantastic display in front of the large Guyanese audience that is anticipated to converge at the venue. Malone in his presentation said that the governing body was pleased to be back in Guyana to witness the hosting of the event, adding that he expects the competition will be exciting and competitive. He added that with the incentive of athletes having the opportunity to achieve Pro Cards it brings more excitement and toughness to the competition. Boyce, a Barbadian, reminded how competitive their teams are usually and how much he expects them to perform outstandingly despite the anticipated large home support for the hosts. Barbados is known for its body building and fitness prowess on the CAC circuit and according to Boyce he is predicting another dominant performance from the ‘Land of the Flying Fish’. Kevin Sinclair had a good match yesterday in both departments. GCB XI, sent into bat first were indebted to Jonathan Van Lange who nailed a 62-ball 72 with four fours and five sixes, accounting for majority of the GCB XI’s meager total of 127 all out from 34 overs, at the Lusignan Ground. Only Brandon Jaikaran (15) managed to come out the blocks with double figures, as Sinclair spun webs around the opposition with returns of 5-32, while fellow spinners Junior Sinclair and veteran Veerasammy Permaul each finished with 2 wickets. Berbice made light work of the run chase as Ram stroked an aggressive 52 from 35 with 8 fours and six while Junior returned with bat, racing to 38 off 23, finding the ropes on six occasions with 4 of those sailing over the ropes. The 53-run opening stand between Junior and Ram, paved the way for Kevin who finished the match with an unbeaten 12-ball 28, featuring 3 fours and pair of sixes which took his team to 128-4 in just 13.2 overs. Exxon hoping to get approval for 7TH project by mid-2025 Oct 18, 2024 News Kaieteur News – With six deep-water projects in the Stabroek Block already receiving regulatory approval from the Government of Guyana (GoG), by mid-2025 ExxonMobil Guyana Limited (EMGL) is hoping to get approval for its seventh project, Hammerhead. A few months ago, EMGL, the operator of Guyana’s resource-rich Stabroek Block made its application to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) seeking approval for a seventh project, Hammerhead. During his address at the International Business Conference (IBC) on Wednesday at the Guyana Marriott Hotel, Georgetown, Reitema said, “We have six sanctioned projects, just (to) put it in context. I don’t think there’s anywhere in the world where we’ve been able to go so quickly from discovery to production to now six sanctioned projects. Guyana’s Stabroek Block Since making its first discovery in 2015, he underscored that Exxon has transitioned from exploration to production in record time. Currently, Exxon is producing over 650,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) from Liza 1, Liza 2 and Payara developments which are supported by three floating production storage and offloading (FPSOs) namely, Destiny, Unity and Prosperity. Rietema also noted that the company has three more projects to come online in the coming years. “These are renderings of the third, the fourth, fifth and sixth FPSOs for those projects that are scheduled to come online in 2025 and then two in 2027,” Exxon’s VP said. He also spoke about the company’s seventh project. “If you’ve been reading the news here in Guyana, we’ve also announced that we’re planning for a seventh project on the Hammerhead discovery. The regulatory reviews on the environmental side are underway, and we’re hoping to receive regulatory approval by the middle of next year,” the EMGL official said. Hammerhead was announced as Exxon’s ninth commercial discovery in August 2018. The Hammerhead-1 well was drilled in a new reservoir, encountering approximately 197 feet (60 meters) of high-quality, oil-bearing sandstone reservoir. The well was safely drilled to 13,862 feet (4,225 meters) depth in 3,773 feet (1,150 meters) of water. The project will target between 120-180 thousand barrels per day (kbd). Exxon is aiming to commence production activities by 2029, following the requisite approvals. Notably, the daily production capacity being targeted is significantly lower compared to the last three projects sanctioned, which each target over 200 kbd. Hammerhead-1 is located approximately 13 miles (21 kilometers) southwest of the Liza-1 well and follows previous discoveries on the Stabroek Block at Liza, Liza Deep, Payara, Snoek, Turbot, Ranger, Pacora and Longtail.  Back in April, Exxon received green-light from the EPA as well as blessings from the government to develop a sixth deep water project, Whiptail. Moreover, the International Energy Agency (IEA) in a new report predicted that ExxonMobil will secure approval from the government for the Hammerhead development by 2025. Related Similar Articles

Persaud glued the innings together with his eye-catching 62 off 50, smashing 6 sixes with a solitary four, with Tagenarine Chanderpaul (41) maintaining his form at the top of the order. Contributions from all-rounders Ronaldo Alimohamed (39), Richie Looknauth (21), Devon Lord (16) and opener Matthew Nandu (18), took Demerara to a formidable 227-10 in 46 overs. Essequibo had a good outing with the ball despite allowing Demerara to post a 200-plus score after allowing them to recover from a shaky position of 138-6. Keemo Paul, fresh off a good CPL grabbed 3-43 as he kept his pace lively during his 10 over spell, while fellow seamer Quinten Sampson (2-33) and left-arm spinner/Captain Anthony Adams (2-20) did well despite allowing a Demerara recovery. Essequibo’s pursuit ended with the score on 190 all out in the 46th over. It took a string of scores from Kanhaiya Ramkarran (39), Kemol Savory (30), Kevon Boodie (26), and Ricardo Adams (27) and Ricardo Peters (19). Spinner Devon Lord again emerged as the top bowler with 3-51 finding support from Ashmead Nedd (2-33) and Persaud (2-8). Peters and his namesake Adams got Essequibo off to a blazing start, taking the score to almost 60 by the 14th over. But due to the lack of losing their set batsmen at key phases, Essequibo found themselves short in the end. Earlier, Persaud and Looknauth’s 5th wicket 50-run partnership was the turning point for Demerara after losing Chanderpaul and company following starts. It took 40 deliveries for Persaud to raise his bat in acknowledgment of his 50, eventually giving his team the shot in the arm which allowed Alimohamed and Lord to power Demerara down the late stretch.
