New parking facility for sand trucks at Great Diamond Oct 17, 2024 News Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal and Deputy Director of Projects Intakab Indarjeet and agency surveyors at site visit Kaieteur News – The Ministry of Housing’s Central Housing and Planning Authority has announced plans to construct a parking facility for sand trucks and large construction vehicles in Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara. According to the ministry, this initiative aims to address the growing issue of these vehicles parking along the East Bank Public Road and in surrounding areas. Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal, alongside Deputy Director of Projects Intakab Indarjeet and agency surveyors, visited the designated site on Wednesday. Minister Croal highlighted the recent boom in the construction sector, which has led to increased movement of larger trucks delivering construction materials. He stated, “We have identified 15 acres of land on the East Bank of Demerara that will be developed. We plan to implement a similar project on the East Coast of Demerara, resulting in a total of 30 acres for Region 4.” The ministry further explained that similar facilities will also be established in Regions 3 and 6, as well as along the Linden/Soesdyke Highway. Minister Croal noted that a location near the Soesdyke junction is being considered for the highway facility, which would allow trucks to temporarily stop while waiting to load or serve as a rest area for overnight stays. On September 13, 2024, Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill ordered the removal of 11 sand trucks that were illegally parked at the Industrial Estate on the Ruimveldt reserves. He emphasized that the government plans to address these parking issues by developing commercial land areas where articulated vehicles can park and be rented. COPASSA opens operations in Guyana Oct 17, 2024 News Kaieteur News – COPASSA Insurance Group on Wednesday announced that it has opened its doors in Guyana. The revelation was made at the three-day International Business Conference (IBC) being held at the Guyana Marriott Hotel, Georgetown. Founder of COPASSA, Lida Guichard Hemming. The insurance company has been operating in Guyana for two years according to its founder, Lida Guichard Hemming. Government deeply concerned over workplace deaths Oct 17, 2024 News – urges strict adherence to safety protocols Kaieteur News – The Ministry of Labour said it is deeply concerned about the recent workplace fatalities that occurred in October 2024, highlighting serious deficiencies in safety and health practices within key sectors. In a press release on Wednesday, the ministry said two tragic incidents took place over the weekend. On Saturday, October 12, 2024, Patrick Picket, a serviceman at Top Mix Cement, sustained fatal injuries while servicing a 14-tonne ready-mix cement/concrete truck.  Picket was inspecting the differential oil beneath the vehicle when the truck, operated by Sham Singh, was moved to the batching plant for loading. Harry Mahase, Batch Supervisor, discovered Picket injured on the ground. Despite being rushed to Diamond Regional Hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The following day, Sunday, October 13, 2024, another tragedy occurred. Mr. Marlon Davidson, a 37-year-old Security Supervisor employed by Hopkinson Mining Security Firm, lost his life after losing control of an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) while travelling along the northern side of Sand Hill Trail. The Ministry on Wednesday said it received another report of a workplace fatality as a result of a suspected drowning in Region Eight and a Senior Occupational Safety and Health Officer is presently on his way to conduct that investigation. “In light of these incidents, the Ministry of Labour, along with the Honourable Joseph Hamilton, Minister of Labour, is urging employers—particularly those in the mining and construction sectors—to adhere strictly to occupational safety and health regulations. These regulations are outlined in the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act, Chapter 99:06,” the release added. Minister Hamilton emphasised the importance of ensuring workplace safety, stating, “Wherever people work, they must be safe. They must be able to return to their families at the end of each day.” The ministry is calling on all employers to prioritise safety and health practices to prevent such tragedies in the future, and it stands ready to work alongside them to foster safer working environments across all sectors. Linden Mayor urges collaborative approach to tackling migrant crisis  Oct 17, 2024 News Kaieteur News – Mayor of Linden, Sharma has urged local authorities and national agencies to work together on a comprehensive response to the rising number of displaced migrants seeking refuge in Linden, Region 10. Linden Mayor, Sharma Solomon “Linden is a compassionate community that values human dignity. However, we must ensure that our resources and infrastructure are adequate to support both our citizens and the incoming migrant population,” said the Mayor in a press statement. During a virtual press conference held on Wednesday, the Mayor urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to involve local stakeholders, including Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) and community leaders, in enhancing capacity for humanitarian assistance while protecting the town’s resources and infrastructure. Solomon said in the statement, “A balanced approach is essential. We need sustainable solutions that respect the needs of our citizens and maintain public order during this period of transition.” Nevertheless, in the statement, it is highlighted that in its first year, the newly elected fifth Council of the Municipality of Linden identified the urgent need for a thorough understanding of the town’s socio-economic situation. “Despite formally requesting recent National Census data from the Bureau of Statistics, the Council has yet to receive a response,” the Mayor highlighted in the press statement. As such, this has reportedly hindered the ability of the Council and key stakeholders to pursue in socio-economic household index survey. “Such as the Regional Democratic Council (RDC 10), the Linden Chamber of Commerce, and the Region 10 Tourism Association, to make informed decisions on resource allocation, policy development, and social programmes,” the Mayor explained. “Without reliable data, we cannot implement the targeted social programmes and infrastructure improvements that our town desperately needs,” said Mayor Solomon in the statement. It is further outlined that the survey, scheduled for October 2024, will provide the necessary data for evidence-based decision-making to ensure equitable resource distribution and sustainable development. Meanwhile, in relation to the growing number of displaced migrants seeking refuge in Linden, this publication on October 10, 2024 reported that leaders and residents of Linden have sounded the alarm over the growing number of Venezuelans who have taken up residency in the mining town, saying that the migrants putting a strain on their already scarce resources and have urged the government to intervene.Some 600 Venezuelans have already been living in the township and on Tuesday Foreign Affairs Minister, Hugh Todd visited the area to engage with the migrants, but he ignored the local leaders. “It is disappointing that during Minister’s Hugh Todd visit to Linden, he chose to meet only with members of his party and Venezuelan migrants, without engaging with local elected officials or community leaders, who raised this matter as an urgent issue, since last December,” Mayor of Linden, Sharma Solomon said. In Mabaruma Region one, the Spartans volleyball club claimed the title from Thomas Hills club 25-21 and 25-16.  In Region four, 7 male teams participated, Alpha defeated Castrol Strikers to claim the title 25-19, 25- 14, 17-25, 18-25, 15-10. In the female category Classic Ball Blasters defeated Castrol Strikers 25-17, 25-23. In a three team battle the Mighty force team were the winners in a three team battle in Siparuta, 25-18, 25- 23. This weekend the 19th and 20th October will see Moruka, Region 6 and 5, Region 2 Mainstay and Capoey, Region 7 Bartica and Upper Mazaruni all having their playoffs in their respective zones. “Cricket Gear for young and promising cricketers in Guyana” Oct 17, 2024 Sports Lower Corentyne Secondary School benefits from cricket balls through Project, thanks Derek Kallicharran and Friends Kaieteur Spors – Lower Corentyne Secondary School out of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice, is the latest to benefit from this joint initiative between Kishan Das of the USA and Anil Beharry of Guyana. They were the recipients of two boxes of red cricket balls, compliments of former Guyana West Indies “B” leg spinning all rounder, Derek Kallicharran and his friends, Vishnu Dudnauth, Bob Harrischan, Johnno Persaud and Ramjit Singh, all USA based Guyanese. At a simple ceremony held recently, Mahendradass Nandlal, acting Head of Department, Allied Arts Department, LCSS, was thankful for the support and promised to get his school more actively involved in cricket, whether its competition or practice matches. This initiative is also thankful for the continued support provided by our friends from the USA and really admires their interest and commitment to cricket development in Guyana and Berbice in particular. Total cricket related items received/purchased so far: $460,000 in cash, thirteen colored cricket uniforms, one set of stumps and bails, two trophies, twenty seven pairs of cricket shoes, thirty three pairs of batting pads, thirty five cricket bats, one floppy hat, thirty two pairs of batting gloves, twenty five thigh pads, three pairs of wicket keeping pads, six arm guards, two chest pads, two boxes, twelve cricket bags, six bat rubbers, six helmets, one fiber glass bat, thirteen boxes of white cricket balls, five boxes of red balls and twenty eight footballs. In addition to the above, gear worth more than $600,000 was donated by Sheik Mohamed, former National wicket keeper/batsman. All cash collected is being used to purchase cricket gear requested and not available at the time. To date, eighty six young players, male and female, from all three counties of Guyana have benefited directly from cash, seven gear bags, two trophies, four arm guards, thirty three bats, three boxes, six helmets, thirty one pairs of cricket shoes, twenty pairs of batting pads, twenty four thigh pads, one bat grip, thirty four pairs of batting gloves, one pair of wicketkeeping pads and three pairs of wicketkeeping gloves. Many others benefited indirectly. In addition, two clubs in the Pomeroon area benefited from two used bats. Pomeroon, Leguan and Wakenam Cricket Committees and Cotton Tree Die Hard also received one box of red cricket balls each, Cold Fusion Cricket Club thirteen color uniforms while RHCCCC received six boxes of balls, fifteen white cricket shirts, one pair of junior batting pads, one pair of wicket keeping gloves, two sets of stumps and bails. Other beneficiaries are The Essequibo Cricket Board, the Town of Lethem, youth coach Travis Persaud (one box of red cricket balls), male and female teams playing the traditional hardball and softball in the Upper Corentyne area, No.65 Young Titans with 30 T-Shirts, youths of Just Try Cricket Club, Wakenaam Cricket Academy (one box of white balls), Shamar Joseph, Nehemiah Hohenkirk, Shamar Apple, Leguan Cricket Committee, Tucber Park Cricket Club,Malteenoes Sports Club (nine cricket balls each), Kendall’s Union Cricket Club with two boxes of red balls and Lower Corentyne Secondary School with twelve red balls. Cricket related items, used or new, are distributed free of cost to young and promising cricketers in Guyana. Skills, discipline and education are important characteristics of the recipients.
