The Petra-organised fifth annual ExxonMobil Boys’ and Girls’ U-14 Football Tournament reaches the semi-final stage, promising thrilling action. As it stands in the girls’ division, the formidable Bartica Girls, boasting an unblemished streak, face a strong Waramuri side both teams are without any losses in the tournament. Meanwhile, the dominant Santa Rosa Girls will aim to thwart the talented President’s College unit from advancing further in the competition. The matches are set and the players are ready to give us some exciting games today. The boys’ division will showcase two high-octane semi-final showdowns between the top U14 football school teams in the nation. Defending champions Bartica Secondary received a knockout punch by the hands of a good-playing Leonora side. Considered underdogs, Leonora Secondary will tackle a well-balanced Chase’s Academic Foundation team for a chance to secure a spot in the final. South Ruimveldt and Dolphin Secondary have been playing some good football over the past six weeks; they are set to battle each other for the other spot in the Boys’ final. These four semi-finals will determine the two teams in each division that will compete for championship glory this upcoming weekend, culminating in the grand finale on July 6. Fans can expect an exciting finish to this tournament. Tucville Girls, New Amsterdam Girls, Charity Girls and Marian Academy Girls will also be on show today. Matches between Bushlot Boys and West Minster Boys, and Bartica Boys and Wismar Christianburg Boys will complete the lineup of matches for the day. (Photo – Jemima-Holmes) GFF-Blue Water Shipping NSC U15 Football C/ship… Kaieteur Sports – St. Ignatius lifted the 2024 title of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF)/Blue Water Shipping National Secondary Schools Girls Under15 Football Championship, following a penalty shootout victory against Waramuri Top in the final on Sunday evening at the National Training Centre in Providence. Following a nil-all score at regulation time, the match headed into a dreaded penalty shootout where the eventual champion held their nerves to prevail 3 – 2. Earlier in the day, Waramuri Top asserted a 2-0 lead in the first half of the first semi final matchup involving Bartica Secondary, which ended as the full-time score. Top scorer Veronica Chatta opened the scoring for Waramuri early into the contest with a superb left-footer from close range; after receiving a loose ball, crossed in from the right-wing into the penalty area, Chatta executed a brilliant finish to put Waramuri one goal ahead. A couple minutes later, Chatta affected another goal as Bartica suffered more misfortunes with her corner being deflected off a standing defender, ultimately ending up in the back of Bartica net; giving Waramuri a handsome lead and solidifying their place in the final. On the other side of the pitch, St Ignatius played very well to keep off Santa Rosa’s strikers but the weight of the match shifted when the eventual champions penetrated Santa Rosa’s net giving them a fighting chance in their quest to the final. With a 1-0 lead in the first half, St Ignatius cruised to victory in the second half as the opposition failed to affect a goal. Defenders dominated the second half in both semi finals matchups with no further goals being scored in either game; culminating with Waramuri and St Ignatius setting up a nail-biter. Royals, the nation’s top club showed poise and grit in the face of a 30-14 deficit, owned by the Jets in the third quarter, as they came within three points of the country’s top-ranked club, trailing, 59-62, and the likely chances of taking home the bacon, in the form of a whopping $400,000 incentive and trophy. But this was not to be as Royals showed what they were worth in the final session to turn on the heat, outscoring the Jets, 14-5, and cantering home winners, 76-63, as Yannick Tappin netted seven of his 17 points of the game, in the last quarter. The Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee will continue to rewrite history in Guyana’s horse racing when the 2024 Guyana Cup race meet runs off on August 11 at Rising Sun Turf Club. This year’s Guyana Cup, which will be the 16th running of the event, will see more than G$40 million dollars in cash to be paid out, and the top horse for the feature race will be rewarded a whooping sum of G$ 11,625,000. Last year’s Guyana Cup saw a total purse of G$24 million across all races, while the top horse in the feature event was paid out G$10 million. The 2024 Guyana Cup will certainly be the biggest, and the day will be packed with side attractions. The first ever fun-park is set to ignite the Rising Sun Turf Club, where kids will witness a parading bar on the spot and multiple stages will be set up across the venue. Guyana’s most influential horse racing promoter, Nasrudeen Mohamed Junior, is urging fans to come out in their numbers. Kaneville daycare was operating illegally – Human Service ministry Jul 01, 2024 News Dead: Three-month-old Kyre Nelson   Death of 3-month-old baby… Kaieteur News – The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security on Saturday said that the daycare where three-month-old Kyre Nelson died was operating illegally because its Child Care Licence had expired since 2020. “The last documents issued to Mya’s Daycare for renewing the Child Care Licence was February 7, 2020,” the ministry stated before adding that checks made during post COVID-19 revealed that the facility was closed. Its owner, a woman currently on vacation in the United States of America (USA), is a registered caregiver with the Child Care and Protection Agency (CP&A) but had repeatedly reported that the daycare has been closed since 2020. “However, investigations revealed that the woman’s granddaughter opened a child care facility illegally on the 2nd of January 2024 unknown to the Child Care and Protection Agency,” the ministry stated before adding that no documentation or assessment was ever made for the “illegal facility by the Child Care and Protection Agency’s Early Childhood Development Services Unit”. Police have since arrested the granddaughter as investigations continue. Reports are that Nelson was found motionless around 12:00hrs with his head face down on a pillow inside of a cradle by one of the two teachers on duty at the day care. The teacher was reportedly preparing the other children at the day care to go home when she noticed Nelson’s lifeless body. An alarm was raised and the other teacher on duty picked the infant up and noticed that he was bleeding from his nostrils. The teachers reportedly washed the blood from the baby’s face in the kitchen area and tried reviving him but to no avail. The child’s mother was then informed and he was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A report was made to the police and an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. The baby’s mother told police that she took him to the day care around 08:00hrs on Friday and passed him over to one of the teachers before leaving for work. That teacher confirmed that she did receive the child alive and fed him some porridge around 09:00hrs. At around 11:00hrs, she placed him to lie down in the cradle and left him to attend to another child. It was about an hour later when the teacher discovered the child motionless. Man nabbed with gun, ammo. in pants crotch Jul 01, 2024 News The gun and matching ammo Stefan Edwards Kaieteur News – A 24-year-old man was nabbed early Sunday morning with an unlicensed gun at Red Dragon Night Club, Robb Street, Georgetown. According to police, ranks acting on information intercepted Stefan Edwards, an unemployed resident of Albouystown at the night club. “A search was carried out on his person by one of the ranks and Edwards was found to be in possession of a 9mm pistol with a magazine containing seven matching rounds of ammunition — which was discovered in his pants crotch,” the police said. Edwards was asked whether he is a licensed firearm holder, he replied in the negative. He was arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station. The firearm and the matching rounds of live ammunition were marked in his presence, placed in an evidence bag and lodged at the station with the sergeant for safe keeping.
