Kaieteur Sports – The Under-14 segment of the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG)-National Schools Basketball Festival (NSBF) 2024 advanced to the Quarterfinals on Thursday, following intense competition in both boys’ and girls’ divisions. Queen’s College, The Bishops’ High, Kwakwani Secondary, and Mackenzie High School emerged as the top contenders in the Boys U14 category with impressive victories over strong opponents on Day Five of the tournament. Formidable challenger, Mackenzie High School, secured double victories on Wednesday and Thursday. They dominated YBG Academy with a decisive 50-16 win, propelling them into the quarterfinals. Latrell Glasgow led the charge with 12 points and 5 steals. Terron Mohabir contributed significantly with 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 steals, while Shaquan Messiah and Isaiah Browsler added 10 and 8 points, respectively, securing a 34-point victory. Kwakwani Secondary showcased their dominance with a commanding 40-8 win against Saints Stanislaus College. Tahir Conway scored exactly half the team’s points with 20 points and 7 rebounds, while Darion Bunbury added 10 points and 5 rebounds, ensuring a 32-point victory for Kwakwani. Queen’s College also defeated Marian Academy 25-13, with Jared Boucher and Jonathan Gomes scoring 8 and 6 points, respectively. Both players also contributed 5 rebounds each while The Bishops’ High narrowly triumphed over President’s College with a 5-point lead. Kemol Pickering’s double-double performance of 11 points and 12 rebounds, along with Aman Daniels’ 5 points and 5 rebounds, played crucial roles in the win. Other Highlights on Wednesday includes, Berbice High beating Marian Academy 35-16, with Avion Kensey scoring 25 points. Mackenzie High defeated St. Rose’s High 26-18, with Shaquan Messiah scoring 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals. Girls’ Division Highlights In the Girls’ division, President’s College-A and B teams exhibited exceptional form on Wednesday. The PC A team overwhelmed Marian Academy with a staggering 74-3 victory. Akeelah Campbell led with 18 points, followed by Junelly Paddy (12 points, 6 rebounds), Krizel Wells (12 points), Tikisha Vanlong (10 points), and Ronaya Grant (10 points). Simultaneously, President’s College-B secured a narrow 13-12 win over The Bishops’ High, with Kenisha Fraser contributing 5 points and 5 rebounds. Despite Reshana Romain’s 10 points for Bishops’, it was not enough to secure a win. Kemol Pickering of Bishops’ (with ball) goes to the rim during their match against PC in the Boy’s U14 division. On Thursday, the President’s College A team continued their winning streak with a dominant performance against Queen’s College. Krizel Wells scored 14 points, while Akeelah Campbell, Junelly Paddy, Obena Hinds, and Ronaya Grant added 12, 13, 10, and 8 points, respectively. Kwakwani Girls also emerged victorious on Thursday, defeating President’s College-B by 13 points. Sherese Leacock shone with 8 points and 9 steals, leading Kwakwani to an 18-5 win. The quarterfinal matches in both the U14 and U18 categories took place yesterday at the National Gymnasium. Dillon Heyliger The Guyanese stated that it was unbelievable when you in the middle playing at such a massive tournament. Last Saturday, the 20-team extravaganza finished in Barbados where India crowned the new champions having defeated South Africa. In the process, they dethroned England. West Indies and USA co-hosted the showpiece. Canada failed to reach the Super8 segment after they ended at number 4 in the Group Stage where five teams competed and the top two progressing. The 20 countries were split into four groups. Heyliger was understandably eager to make an impression and help Canada reaching the next stage. “I was ecstatic to play in a World Cup; I think that is every young cricketer’s dream. Yes, I would have loved to see my team going true and try win the World Cup, but the experience was memorable,” the right-arm fast-bowler declared. Heyliger bagged nine wickets from three matches including a best of 4-20 versus Ireland from his maximum four overs. He rated that performance as excellent and it would stay in his memory for a very long time. “I think I bowled pretty well on a pitch that was responsive; I had wanted to do well for Canada and that performance was special especially in a winning game,” the 34-year-old Heyliger stated. In their opening game, Canada were beaten by USA before they succumbed to Pakistan. The Canadians bounced back to humble Ireland by 12 runs but their clash with heavyweight India was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain. USA was the other side advanced from their group. Quizzed on his preparations for the big-dance, Heyliger, who represented Guyana at the youth level, responded: “I put in a lot of work into my training, but I was motivated to play hard cricket because it was a World Cup and you want to do well,” Heyliger commented. Having featured in such a prestigious competition where the world was watching, the Essequibian Heyliger is encouraging young, aspiring cricketers to play good cricket and stay disciplined and committed to the game. In the Boys’ category, Guyana began strongly with a 3-0 triumph over Barbados and a significant 6-0 victory against the Cayman Islands. However, a 0-3 loss to Bermuda 3-0 resulted in a 3-3 tie with Barbados. Guyana then faced the BVI boys in another tight 3-3 tie, securing victory by net points. Advancing to the semifinals, the Boys faced Barbados on Friday evening, who secured the #2 spot in their group after a 3-3 tie with Bermuda. Nicholas Verwey, Michael Alphonso, Shiloh Asregado and Ethan Bulkan are bound for semifinals matchups against the Barbadians. The venue is the Amelia’s Ward Hard Court and tonight (Saturday) the first game of the tournament will see Block 22 Flames taking on Amelia’s Ward Jets at 6.30pm and the second bringing together Retrieve Raiders and Victory Valley Royals from 8.30pm. Tomorrow (Sunday) another double header is planned in this round robin format to arrive at the top four clubs to play in the semifinals and then the final. In the first game at 6.30pm, Block 22 Flames will match skills with Central Mackenzie Kings and that will be followed at 8.30pm when Victory Valley Royals face Amelia’s Ward Jets.
