Agricola vendors protest against Chinese setting up shop in their village Oct 02, 2024 News …say it will put them out of business Kaieteur News- Residents and vendors of Agricola, East Bank of Demerara (EBD) on Monday protested against Chinese-owned businesses being established in the community. They fear that establishments such as the supermarkets will drive the locals out of business. Vendors voiced their apprehension about a new Chinese supermarket set to be opened at the corner of Brutus Street and the East Bank Public Road. They argue that the supermarket’s presence will threaten their small vending shops. Agricola vendors protesting against the establishment of Chinese businesses in their community. Kaieteur News understands that these vendors would sell their products from outside of a building that was recently sold to Chinese nationals, who plan to renovate it into a supermarket. In an interview with Royston Drakes Production, a small group of vendors shared their discontent. One vendor, identified only as Ms. Clark, who has been selling outside the building for over 50 years, expressed her frustration: “I can’t understand Chinese coming to put me out of my little business that I’m hustling for. I have my little house to look after; my grandchildren, and now I have to move for the sake of the Chinese coming here.” Another vendor said that the local shops have been taking care of the community. “We have a business association in Agricola where our businesses take care of our community. We don’t want them here,” the vendor said. The man further criticized the government of Guyana for allowing foreigners to “snatch” opportunities from locals: “The government is bringing in foreigners that are not benefitting Guyanese… We can’t go to China and open a business.” Another vendor said the vendors in the community will suffer should the Chinese owned supermarket open. “What will happen to the people that already establish their business for over the years? Yes they are going to sell at a cheaper price at the beginning and after time goes by they are going to increase,” the vendor said. Biker killed in Windsor Forest smash-up Oct 02, 2024 News Kaieteur News- A 30-year-old motorcyclist, identified as Stephon Birkett, died in an accident on the Windsor Forest Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD), on Monday. The incident involved Birkett’s unregistered motorcycle and a motorcar with registration number PDD 3036, driven by a 63-year-old man. According to police reports, Birkett was speeding when he made a sudden U-turn and collided with a stationary motorcar facing east on the northern side of the public road. Birkett, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, was thrown onto the road and suffered multiple injuries about his body. Dead: Stephon Birkett, He was picked up in an unconscious state by an ambulance and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was examined by doctors on duty. Birkett was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he succumbed to his injuries around 18:20 hrs. Birkett’s body is currently at the hospital’s mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, the driver of the motorcar was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital for treatment and has since been released. He is currently in custody assisting with the investigation. Still no trace of  ‘Bricks’ Oct 02, 2024 News …as police end day four of search, issue wanted bulletin for sixth suspect Kaieteur News- Despite relentless searches in various locations, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) is yet to locate Joshua David also known as ‘Bricks,’ who was abducted, while purchasing food at the New Thriving Restaurant at Main Street, Georgetown on September 27, 2024. Ranks entering vehicle, as search concludes atAnnandale Backlands, East Coast Demerara (ECD) Police on Tuesday continued their search in the Annandale Backlands, East Coast Demerara (ECD). After combing the area for hours with the assistance of drones, ranks turned up empty handed yet again.  Despite the outcome, police have maintained that they will continue to follow all leads as they do their best to find David. Joshua David, also known as ‘Bricks’ In addition, since the disappearance of David police have issued six wanted bulletins.  On Tuesday a wanted bulletin was issued for Damion Barlow, whose last known location is at Lot 47 Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown.  On Saturday, five wanted bulletins were issued for  Osafo Peters also known as ‘Saddest,’  Alpha Poole, Aaron Alleyne also known as ‘Cats’, Wayne Barker and Dwayne Griffith. Importantly, Peters and Poole turned themselves into police on Monday, while the other suspects are yet to be arrested.  Police reported that Alleyne’s last known address is West Ruimveldt, Barker at Lot ‘G’ Norton Street, Lodge, and Griffith at Lot 68 William Street, Kitty. On Monday a video surfaced on social media showing David as he was abducted. He was surrounded by five persons, while in a scuffle. It was observed that during the scuffle, one of the men kicked David in a bid to have him cooperate. Thereafter, he was seen being pushed. It is unclear where he was taken. Meanwhile, Kaieteur News understands that the wanted men are connected to the recent drive-by shooting that killed 39-year-old Lawrence Wayne, known as ‘Boy Boy,’ and 40-year-old Anthony Havercome on D’Urban Street, Georgetown, on August 24, 2024. Man gets bail after charged with rape of minor Oct 02, 2024 News Kaieteur News- A man was on Tuesday granted bail in the sum of $140,000, when he appeared at a court to answer to a rape charge. Charged with rape: Deen Hubbard Deen Hubbard appeared before Magistrate Teriq Mohammed, where the charge was read to him. He was charged with the rape of a child under sixteen years. Hubbard was not required to plea and was placed on $140,000 bail. As such, the court case was adjourned and he is scheduled to return to on October 11, 2024 for continuation. TKR were held together by Pooran who piggybacked off his own form, having scored a ton in the last game. Record year for emerging player appearances in CPL Oct 02, 2024 Sports CPL has seen a record number of appearances by Emerging Players. (CPL) CPL – The 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has seen a record number of appearances by Emerging Players. Across the group stage there have been 44 appearances by these up and coming cricketers, the most that there has ever been during a CPL season. To qualify for the Emerging Player category the cricketer must be under 23 at the start of the current calendar year and have not appeared for the senior West Indies side. Teams are obliged to give the two players in this category a combined total of five appearances but during the 2024 tournament a number of the Emerging Players have become first team regulars. There have been some excellent performances from these young players with Jewel Andrew scoring a half century for the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons, Shaqkere Parris made 57 for Trinbago Knight Riders against the Saint Lucia Kings and Ackeem Auguste making consistent contributions for the Kings. Nathan Edward picked up a couple of important wickets for the Trinbago Knight Riders and Ashmead Nedd took a career best 4/25 for the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots against the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
