RHTYSC invests heavily into youth cricket development programme Oct 01, 2024 Sports Youth cricketers pose with some of the newly acquired equipment. Kaieteur Sports – Founded in September 1990 by the award-winning St Francis Committee Developers the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports club has over the years developed into one of Guyana’s leading Cricket Club. The club has won a total of 125 cricket tournament at all levels and has also produced 124 players for Berbice and Guyana, while a total of 16 has gone on to play for either the West Indies or the United States of America. The club has stated that its success over the last 34 years has been based on a formula of sheer hard work, dedication, visionary leadership and proper forward planning. As the RHTYSC enters its 35th year management has taken a decision to invest heavily in the development of the new cricketing talent at the junior level between the ages of 11 to 15. The cricket development management committee led by veteran administrator Robby Kissoonlal and including Keith Hicks and Tyrone Pottaya are responsible for the special project with the assistance of coach Ryan Kissoonlal. The committee intends to attract at least 60 new cricketing talents into the RHTYSC membership, to arrange several development programmes and to obtain the necessary equipment/gears needed for the coaching staff. The club on Wednesday last received a six feet by 4 feet batting mat that would be used by the youth cricketers in the batting cage on the concrete pitch. RHTYSC secretary Hilbert Foster stated that the expensive batting mat would allow the youth cricketers to practice all year round despite the weather conditions and allow the coaches to conduct one-on-one sessions. The batting mat would also reduce the damage to the balls on the bare concrete pitch. The club also received a 120 feet practice net compliments of former RHTYSE under19 player Sharma Sukhdeo. Sukhdeo who now resides in the United States of America is a strong supporter of the club and readily agreed to donate the practice net which would be used around the batting cage. The RHTYSC now has a total of four practice Nets at its disposal. The club now have four additional kiddies practice sets for the under 13 players. The plastic kits are mainly used by players who are playing the game for the first time and are being taught how to play the game properly by coaches. Foster disclosed that the RHTYSC now have a total of 20 sets and plan to obtain more in the future. Dozens of cricket balls were also shipped in the United States of America with sponsorship from overseas based Guyanese Renrick Batson a former RHTYSC first division captain, Feroze Islam and Ravi Etwaroo who is the owner of the popular cricket zone cricket store in the United States. The balls would be used for coaching session, junior elite training session and practice matches among the youths. The club has also invested in fielding equipment, bowling machine, catching cribs, exercise equipment among others in an effort to produce all round players. Additionally, Foster stated that the club invests heavily into its membership by assisting with personal cricket gears, uniform, educational materials, bicycle electronic tablet among others. Membership to the club is free. The club has also invested heavily into the up keep of the Area H ground for the restart of the 2024 season by repainting the two sight screens, constructing over 300 feet of boundary boards and planting grass at selected spot in the ground. The RHTYSC has also sought and received assistance from the region 6 RDC to undergo urgent repairs to the main pavilion. A $800,000 mobile grass cutter was also recently purchased with the assistance of Dr. Frank Dembow and Panthera Solution Inc. The Area H ground is the home venue for players like Kevin Sinclair, Kevlon Anderson, Junior Sinclair, Shemaine Campbell, Sabika Gajnabi and Sheneta Grimmond, who are 2024 CPL players. Woman to stand trial for attempted murder of boyfriend Oct 01, 2024 News Kaieteur News – A 36-year-old woman was committed to stand trial at the High Court for attempted murder when she appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Monday. Sabrina Bethune The defendant, Sabrina Bethune, a resident of Evans Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, is accused of wounding her boyfriend, 29-year-old Linden Davidson, with intent to kill on September 12, 2022. According to police reports, Davidson suffered significant injuries as a result of the attack, including the loss of hearing in his left ear and damage to his vocal cords. During the hearing, Magistrate Faith McGusty noted that police had experienced difficulties locating Bethune, and that she had attempted to escape from custody upon her arrest, which raised concerns about her being a flight risk. Consequently, she was committed to stand trial at the Supreme Court of Judicature (High Court). At her initial hearing on September 16, 2022, Bethune appeared before then Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, where she was not required to enter a plea and was released on $150,000 bail. However, her bail was later revoked, and an arrest warrant was issued for her. She was subsequently apprehended in 2024. Upon hearing the news of her trial, Bethune broke down in tears in the courtroom, refusing to return to her prison cell. She is a mother of three children. According to reports published in the Kaieteur News, the incident occurred during an argument over a phone call Bethune received from another man. The altercation began around 22:00hrs at Davidson’s home after he questioned her about the call. This led to a heated argument. The situation escalated when Bethune went into the kitchen, retrieved a knife, and attacked Davidson, stabbing him to the neck. In a desperate attempt to escape, Davidson fled from Bethune, managed to find his bicycle, and rode to the Ruimveldt Police Station, where he sought help from the authorities. GBBFF buoyed by GoG support for CAC C/ships Oct 01, 2024 Sports Kaieteur Sports – The CAC Bodybuilding & Fitness Championships slated to be staged here in Guyana later this month presents another glorious opportunity for the Government of Guyana (GoG) and the Private Sector to unequivocally underline their commitment towards the support for sports. Coming hot off the heels of a commitment made by His Excellency Dr. Irfaan Ali to the Golden Jaguars to instigate motivation in their quest for World Cup qualification, the GoG through its related agencies the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport (MCY&S) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) have made similar signals to the Guyana Body Building & Fitness Federation (GBBFF). The support of these two government agencies is crucial to the successful staging of such a high-profile event which is anticipated to showcase over 250 athletes from over 20 countries. President Ali through his government has continued to exhibit a steadfast commitment to the development of sports across Guyana and budgetary allocation of $4.6 billion to the sector must serve as irrefutable evidence of such support. The hosting of the CAC Bodybuilding c/ships has already received the backing of the Ministry and the NSC according to President of the GBBFF Keavon Bess, who additionally revealed that the entities involvement has been holistic. “They’ve been part of the discussions both in terms of finance and logistics and their input is most welcomed.” He, however, recognised the importance of the Private Sector (PS) as well, informing that while Government’s is always crucial, so too is the assistance of the PS. “They too have similar capabilities in terms of logistical acumen to resolve any difficulty that may arise, while at the same time offering financial support as well,” Bess said. He admitted that the undertaking is a huge one and the backing of all the various sectors are most welcomed. Guyana will be hosting the c/ships after a 20-year hiatus and will no doubt be aiming to grasp the opportunity to leave a positive legacy as host. Over thirty athletes have been shortlisted by the GBBFF and according to the President they are confident of doing well in front of home fans. Linden woman dies in Rockstone car accident Oct 01, 2024 News Kaieteur News – An accident on the Rockstone Trail on Sunday resulted in the death of 38-year-old Julie Higgins, a resident of One Koker Squatting Area, Wismar, Linden. Dead: Julie Higgins The incident occurred around 15:35 hours, approximately ten minutes from the Rockstone Junction. The vehicle involved was a Toyota 212 bearing registration number PJJ 9024, driven by Kenrick Johnson of Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden. Higgins was a passenger in the car. According to police reports, the car was travelling west along the southern side of the trail at high speed when Johnson lost control after negotiating a left bend. The vehicle overturned multiple times before coming to a stop. Higgins was reportedly thrown from the car and found lying motionless some distance away. Both Johnson and Higgins were assisted by bystanders and transported to the Linden Hospital Complex. Upon examination, Higgins was pronounced dead on arrival, while Johnson sustained injuries to his left shoulder and body pain. Her body has been transferred to Jestso Funeral Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination. A breathalyzer test conducted on Johnson showed no trace of alcohol. He remains in police custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation. Following the incident, a video circulating on social media prompted an outpouring of shock and sympathy from friends and family. One family member commented on Facebook, “This my son’s auntie, what is this? RIP, Julie.” Another person said, “Julie Higgins, my God… my childhood friend… gone too soon… RIP… this broke my heart.” Related Similar Articles
