Three charged, fined for drunk driving in Bartica Sep 24, 2024 Court Stories, Features / Columnists, News Kaieteur News – Three men residing in Bartica, Region Seven were on Monday fined, when they appeared before Magistrate Tariq Mohamed, to answer to separate Driving Under the Influence (DUI) charges. The trio, 24-year-old Lonzo Narine, a cashier from First Avenue, Bartica, 32-year-old Keven Currica, a taxi driver from Sixth Avenue, Bartica and 32-year-old Vishall Sancharan, a lorry driver from Byderabo Road, Bartica, all appeared before Magistrate Mohamed at the Bartica Magistrates’ Court, where the charge was read to them separately. The charges stated that the three men drove a motor vehicle whilst their breath alcohol level exceeded the prescribed limit. The three men pleaded guilty to the DUI charge and were each fined $200,000. Failure to pay the fine will lead to three months imprisonment Meanwhile, 58-year-old Nikita Fagundes, a taxi driver from Fourth Avenue, Bartica was fined $50,000 after he was charged with three traffic offences: refusal of consent to take a breathalyzer test, unlicensed driver and breach of insurance. Fagundes, made his first court appearance before Magistrate Mohamed at the Bartica Magistrates’ Court, where the three charges were read to him. He pleaded guilty to each charge. Considering his plea, Magistrate Mohamed imposed a fine of $20,000 for the refusal of consent to take a breathalyzer test charge. Failing to pay the fine, Fagundes could spend three months i prison. A fine of $5000 was imposed for driving without a licence in addition to a $25,000 fine for breach of insurance. Failure to pay will result in two weeks imprisonment. Related Similar Articles

Third suspect charged with Canal No. 2 wedding house murder Sep 24, 2024 Court Stories, Features / Columnists, News Natram Persaud called ‘Vishal’, Otto Pitman called ‘One Dan’, Oliver Franklyn and Nicholas Singh Kaieteur News – The third suspect in the murder of Natram Persaud called ‘Vishal’ who was killed on December 31, 2023, during a robbery at a wedding was on Monday charged with murder. The accused Nicholas Singh also known as ‘Pookie,’ a 25-year-old resident of Durban Street, Georgetown made his first court appearance before Magistrate Rhondell Weever at the Wales Magistrates’ Court, where the charge was read to him. He was not required to plead and was remanded to prison. Singh is scheduled to return to court on October 10, 2024, for reports. Kaieteur News reported earlier this year that Otto Pitman called ‘One Dan’, and Oliver Franklyn were also charged with Persaud’s murder when they appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Faith McGusty. It was reported that around 20:50hrs on December 31, 2023, three male bandits, all of whom were dressed in dark coloured clothing and wearing masks, showed up at the house. One of the bandits was armed with a handgun. According to police, the men invaded the wedding house of Mr. and Mrs. Samsundar where about sixty people were in attendance. The yard where the celebrations were being held is situated on the northern side of the Canal N0.2 access road, facing south. At the entrance to the yard, which is situated at the southern side, is a metal grilled gate which was wide open at the time of the robbery. Police reported that Rambarhak was sitting at the western side of the entrance along with another friend when the three masked men approached him and one of the men who was armed, discharged two rounds at him and relieved him of his gold band. The suspects exited the yard and Persaud chased after the intruders and began to scuffle with one of the suspects. “During the scuffle, a loud explosion was heard, after which Persaud fell to the ground. The three bandits then made good their escape east of the Canal #2 Polder access road,” the police had said. Persaud reportedly sustained a gunshot injury to the back of his head and was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Minister Edghill Calls for GPF to Restrict Truck Use on East Coast Railway Embankment Sep 24, 2024 News Traffic congestion caused by broken road on the Coldingen road on the railway embankment Kaieteur News – Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill is urging the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to enforce restrictions on heavy-duty trucks traveling along the East Coast Railway Embankment. On August 31, 2024, the Ministry of Public Works issued a notice, advising truck drivers that, “effective immediately, they are required to use the main road and refrain from using the Railway Embankment corridor.” The announcement highlighted ongoing repairs to bridges along the embankment, which have suffered damage from heavy trucks, impacting both residents and other road users. In a letter published in the Stabroek News on Tuesday, it was noted that heavy trucks continue to use the embankment, recently causing a bridge on the Coldingen, East Coast Demerara road to collapse again and leading to significant traffic congestion on the main access road. The concerned citizen remarked, “Alas, three weeks have passed since this missive was issued and the trucks have never stopped using this road. In fact, they have become more blatant with blaring horns and moving in convoys of three or more during the day and night.” In response to these concerns, Minister Edghill spoke with Kaieteur News on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for the GPF to enforce measures to keep trucks off the railway road. “Trucks will not be allowed on the Railway Embankment, crossing the aqua panel bridges because of the weight they carry,” he stated. “They are damaging the bridges, I just done fixing a lot of bridges over the weekend. The police have to enforce these measures, it’s the way we dealt with the situation in Lamaha Gardens (Georgetown), we put up the no trucking signs and so on, so that is the same thing that we have to do.” Back in March 2024, the Minister had visited the Lamaha Gardens, announcing reduced speed limits and the installation of signs, along with plans for GPF patrols to ensure compliance. ‘The weed is my medication’ – driver tells Police Sep 24, 2024 News Kaieteur News – Police on Sunday arrested a driver after he was nabbed with 4.2 grams of cannabis, during a mobile patrol along the Pakera road in Matthews Ridge, North West District, Region One. The 4.2 grams of marijuana that was found, along with the two joints (contains suspected cannabis) Cononiah Jupiter The driver, Cononiah Jupiter was driving a black Toyora Fielder Wagon vehicle with registration number PAH 4429. During a mobile patrol, ranks stopped the vehicle and Commander of Region One, Krishna Ramana requested a search of the vehicle for narcotics and Jupiter consented. Police in a report said that upon searching, ranks discovered two zip lock bags containing leaves, seeds, and stems, along with two joints suspected to be cannabis in Jupiter’s pants pocket. Jupiter reportedly admitted that the marijuana found was for his private use and he used it as a medication. Thereafter, he was cautioned, arrested and then taken to the Matthews Ridge Police Station. While at the Police Station, the suspected marijuana was weighed and amounted to 4.2 grams. Trio charged with attempted murder, assault and unlawful wounding Sep 24, 2024 Court Stories, Features / Columnists, News Rondell Dowding, Onecia Warrick and Maryann Allicock Kaieteur News – Two sisters and the boyfriend of one of the sisters appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Monday to face charges related to attempted murder, assault, and unlawful wounding against each other. The sisters, Onecia Warrick, a 24-year-old unemployed woman, and Maryann Allicock, a 32-year-old food vendor, were charged with attempting to commit murder against Rondell Dowding. Dowding, a 36-year-old food vendor and Allicock’s boyfriend, was charged with unlawful wounding and assault causing bodily harm against the sisters. The incident occurred on September 1, 2024, at their home located at Lot 3421 Stevedore Housing Scheme, Georgetown. According to police statements, around 01:30 hrs, Dowding and Allicock were at home in their bedroom when Dowding approached Allicock to have intercourse and she denied him. This denial led to an argument that escalated into a physical altercation. Hearing the commotion, Warrick exited her bedroom to investigate. Upon witnessing the fight, she began recording the incident on her phone. It was at this moment that Dowding allegedly ran towards Warrick and attacked her with a knife he had retrieved from the kitchen, resulting in injuries to her finger. Shortly thereafter, the sisters’ brother returned home and, upon hearing the disturbance, intervened to assist his sisters. During the confrontation, Allicock, Warrick, and their brother allegedly restrained Dowding and began to beat and chop him about his body, causing him to sustain serious injuries, including deep wounds on his abdomen and anus. The police were called to the scene, and Dowding was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he was admitted in critical condition and had to undergo emergency surgery. He was discharged four days later. On September 19, both sisters and Dowding were arrested and subsequently charged with their respective offenses. Warrick and Allicock appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty, who read the charges to them. The sisters pleaded not guilty and were each granted $150,000 bail. The case was adjourned to October 16, 2024. Meanwhile, Dowding appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore, where he also pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was granted $50,000 for unlawful wounding and $35,000 for assault causing bodily harm. Man who stabbed 9-year-old seven times in the neck remanded Sep 24, 2024 Court Stories, Features / Columnists, News Kaieteur News – A 23-year-old man was on Monday remanded to prison after being charged with unlawfully wounding a nine-year-old boy by stabbing him several times. Remanded: Joshua Austin The accused Joshua Austin is accused of stabbing Justin Colley of Lot 353 Russel Street, Charlestown, Georgetown seven times in his neck on September 12, 2024 on Broad Street, Charlestown. Austin, who lives at Lot 151 Lodge Housing Scheme, Georgetown, appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where the charge was read to him. He pleaded not guilty. According to police statements presented in court, Austin and Colley are known to each other as they live in the same neighbourhood. On September 12, 2024, around 19:30 hrs, Colley was walking on Broad Street with his mother. Austin, upon seeing the child became annoyed and allegedly stabbed Colley seven times in the neck with a pair of scissors. Colley was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was treated. The incident was subsequently reported to the police. As a result, Austin was arrested and later charged with the offence. The court was informed that Colley was discharged from the hospital seven days after the incident and is currently recovering at home. During the court proceedings, when questioned by the Magistrate about his relationship with Colley, Austin claimed they are friends, stating, “He’s my friend; we all live in the same house.” The prosecutor objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the offense committed against a child.
