Paperless border management system for ports of entry – Jagdeo Sep 23, 2024 News Kaieteur News- The Government of Guyana is on a quest to implement paperless system by introducing blockchain technology in some of its agencies, as part of efforts to enhance cyber security. Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo Blockchain technology is renowned for its ability to maintain data integrity and prevent unauthorised modifications or tampering. It makes it difficult for someone to falsify or tamper with records.  The technology is used widely to allow transparent information sharing within a business network. A blockchain database stores data in blocks that are linked together in a chain. Speaking at his weekly press conference last week, Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo explained that work is done towards streamlining airport processes to enhancing healthcare systems. He explained, “We have a project that will make our airport paperless. And we’re hoping by the end of the year that this will happen, that we have an automated border management system that will pre-screen people; that would allow us to know long before people arrive in the country, who they are and their background that would allow people to online or through an app fill up all of the entry forms and customs declarations – everything online and that would be shared directly to the GRA (Guyana Revenue Authority).” According to Jagdeo, the government is building out the digital infrastructure of the country, with the ultimate goal of improving the efficiency of public services and boosting economic output. He noted that it is one of the main objectives is the development of Guyana’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Masterplan 2030. The VP noted that the electronic identification card system (e-ID) will be used to implement the system.  “The system will feature fingerprint verification, eliminating the need for traditional proof of address,” he said while clarifying that the system will not replace the current National Identification card. The VP said Ministry of Health is working on designing and installing an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.  Moreover, he revealed that the ‘Safe Guyana’ Initiative will leverage technology to enhance public security and prevent criminal activities. Several Command Centres have been constructed to complement this project. The VP noted too that the technology will prevent record tampering for personal gain, especially at the Lands and Survey and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).  “…Because we have had complaints about people in those places. Leases or prospecting, licenses are given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. So, say if you apply in August and someone comes to apply for the same piece of land in September; I’m supposed to get it because I applied in August. Now the person, if they can disappear my record, then the person in September might get it,” he clarified. President Cup: Olympic Kremlin does it again Sep 23, 2024 Sports Olympic Kremlin completed the double; winning both Guyana Cup and President Cup. Kaieteur Sports – It was simply Deja Vu at the Rising Sun Turf Club as Olympic Kremlin completed the double with a sensational win at the President Cup. The Slingerz Racing Stables horse, who won the Guyana Cup last month in similar fashion, was piloted again by Jockey Acedenir Gulart. He ran another sensible race making the jump at the right time, to stop the clock at one minute, 47 seconds in the one-mile event. Nova Sol came second again, while Easy Time finished third. Mapa Do Brasil settled for third in a high-octane feature which was sponsored by Banks DIH. The feature race began with the Master Z racing stables duo Easy Time and Stat setting an early tone but Olympic Kremlin took the outside and sealed the deal yet again. The President Cup started in good heat with the Kris Jagdeo Construction L Class Non-Earners. Lion Heart took the top spot while Dr Switch finished second. Danstar and Legacy were the other finishers in that order. Race two was the D Sawh Mechanical Workshop J Class and Lower/ H3 Non Earners last start. Rachel dominated the race from the get-go to claim victory while Hayley fought well to finish second. Amazing Grace had to settle for third while Top Gun came fourth. The third race of the day was the Kabisa H Class Classic. Theory of Colors from the Jagdeo Racing Stables emerged as the winner, while American Traveller finished second. Emotional Damage ran third and Stroke of Luck finished fourth. Race four was the J’S Supermarket two-year-old maidens. Storm Bird stormed to victory, finishing ahead of Miracle Star. Easy Bella ran third and Irish Eyes came fourth. The excitement was intense in race five which was the Peter Lewis Sprint Classic for horses three-year-old and over. The newly imported Brazilian horse, Companheiro Leal out of Js Racing Stables impressed on Guyana debut. It was a gate to pole victory for Jockey Dylan Machado as Companheiro Leal reigned supreme. Ritorna Vincetori, another Brazilian imported horse from Slingerz Racing Stables, was good competition but had to settle for second while Creemore finished third. Stormy Entry ran in fourth. The familiar horses in Bossalina and Spankhurst were among the top four finishers. The penultimate race of the day was Anirud Ramcharitar Construction Firm K Non Earners 2024 / L Class Open and J3 first time starters. It was a packed field and Money Time prevailed. Jockey Quinton Kellman who started the day with a win, came up trumps again as he piloted Money Time to a scintillating victory. He finished ahead of Princess Samiyah, Kiss and Swinging Jet in that order. The President Cup was presented by Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee; it was another well-organized and exciting race day at Rising Sun Turf Club. Organizers have informed that races will return to the Bush Lot United Turf Club in West Coast Berbice. Js Racing Stables will host the Kabisa Stakes Horse race meet on Sunday October 20. Guyanese teams shine at 45th Chess Olympiad Sep 23, 2024 Sports – Three players gain chess titles Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Olympiad Chess teams delivered commendable performances at the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad, held in Budapest, Hungary, which concluded on September 22, 2024. Notable contributions came from Aditi Joshi, Sachin Pitamber, Loris Nathoo, and Anthony Drayton. Fourteen-year-old Aditi Joshi (1535), competing in the Women’s category, achieved an impressive 7.5 points from 10 games, securing 6 wins, 3 draws, and only 1 loss. Joshi’s performance was remarkable, especially given her young age. The Queen’s College student demonstrated confidence and maturity well beyond her years, making her the youngest female Guyanese to earn the prestigious Woman FIDE Master title. Sachin Pitamber (1715), also fourteen years of age, and competing in the Open Category, scored 5.5 points from 9 games. Pitamber, another rising star from Queen’s College, played consistently, securing 4 wins and 3 draws, while suffering only 2 losses. He has become the youngest Guyanese player to earn the Candidate Master title. Veteran player Loris Nathoo (1786) ended on an impressive score of 3.5 out of 8, earning the Candidate Master title. His notable victories included defeating CM Yoboue Hermann Manan (2030) from the Ivory Coast and FM Soon Wei Yee (2219) from Brunei Darussalam, showcasing his experience and skill throughout the tournament. The successful Guyana Chess Team that attended the prestigious event. FM Anthony Drayton (1964) contributed 3.5 points from 9 games on Board 2, with a standout draw against International Master Sameer Loay (2194) from Jordan in the second round. Drayton went on to defeat CM Cottle (1804) from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, FM De Gondo (2045) from the Ivory Coast and FM Rodriguez (2002) from Puerto Rico. Drayton’s continued excellence and skill remain evident after years of high-level play. The Olympiad Open team included Candidate Master Taffin Khan, FIDE Master Anthony Drayton, Loris Nathoo, Keron Sandiford, and reserve player Sachin Pitamber. CM Khan (2066), playing on the most challenging Board 1, scored 2 points from 9 games, including wins against St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ FM Enemchukwu (2001) and Cayman Islands’ Chinake Kudakwashe (1859). National Junior Champion Keron Sandiford secured two draws from 9 challenging games against St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ Schneider (1486) and Sierra Leone’s Brian Adeshole Beckley (1814). On the Women’s team, National Women’s Champion WCM Jessica Callender earned 1.5 points from 7 games, including wins against Grenada’s Chitan Bernel and Vanuatu’s Milfirer Ela. WCM Sasha Shariff gained 2.5 points from 10 games, with 1 win and 3 draws. Shariff’s victories included a win over Achazia from Grenada and draws with players from Equatorial Guinea, Vanuatu, and Mozambique’s Katina Efentakis (1650). Young Ciel Clement contributed 2 points with victories against her counterpart from Guernsey and Bermuda’s Olga Gontcharova (1567). During the biennial world event involving close to 200 chess-playing nations, the Guyanese men’s team were matched with Hungary, Jordan, Palestine, Jersey, the Ivory Coast, Afghanistan, Brunei Darussalam, Sierra Leone, Puerto Rico and sister CARICOM nations St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the Cayman Islands. Despite individual standout performances, the Guyana Open team finished 174th overall. The team won against St. Vincent and the Grenadines 3.5:0.5, the Cayman Islands 2.5:1.5, and the Ivory Coast 1:3. The Guyana Women’s team came up against Denmark, Palestine, Grenada, Guernsey, Malta, the Bahamas, Equatorial Guinea, Vanuatu, Mozambique, Liberia and Bermuda. The team made significant progress by climbing to 145th in the world rankings. The women won against Grenada 4:0, Vanuatu 1:3 and Bermuda 2.5:1.5, and drew their matches with Guernsey and Equatorial Guinea. The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) commends the teams’ efforts, particularly those who earned new titles and improved their international ratings. The GCF notes that tournaments at this level are highly competitive and only ongoing training, study and dedication will accomplish improved results. Overall, Guyanese chess players showcased their growing talent and potential on the international stage, highlighting the increasing strength of our chess community. The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) commends the efforts of both teams and expresses gratitude to President Irfaan Ali, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission for their continued support. CPL – The four teams to make the playoffs of the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) may have been decided but that did not stop the Barbados Royals and St Lucia Kings slugging it out in Providence with bragging rights and momentum all to be played for. Both sides have booked their place in the 2024 CPL Playoffs along with Guyana Amazon Warriors and the Trinbago Knight Riders and there was only NRR to split them ahead of the match with both sides winning five of their seven matches and losing two to sit on ten points apiece. Royals captain Rovman Powell won the toss and elected to field first but his bowlers struggled to make as much impact as they’ve been used to throughout the tournament so far. The 27-year-old left-hander Ramkhellwan clobbered 19 sixes and four fours during his enterprising stay at the crease. His team reached 199-2 with 11 balls to spare replying to Apollo Sport Club’s challenging 197-6 from the reduced 18-overs. The reduction of the overs was due to a late start.
