Kaieteur News – Banks DIH Limited continues its efforts in investing in youth development by awarding 20 recent National Grade Six Assessment students with 5-year bursaries. The awards were distributed at a ceremony held at the company’s headquarter and was attended by Mr. Gavin Todd, Operations and Engineering Director, Mr. Mohamed Hussein, Engineering Services Director, Mrs. Sharon Nelson, Human Resources Executive, and other Executives, along with the awardees and their Parents, on Saturday,24th August, at Thirst Park, Georgetown. This Bursary Awards programme provides valuable financial assistance to students who displayed exceptional dedication to their studies, the beverage giant said in a press release. The awardees are the top twenty high-performing candidates submitted by employees (10) and shareholders (10). This year’s awardees are: Ethan Bassoo, Misha Holder, Nikisha Allen, Thaddeus Siebs, Gavianna Mohan, Xavi Bishop, Roquan Enniss, Mya Greaves, Z’Caria Henry, Alexander Fox, Ariel Hamer, Kalila Mc Intosh, Andrea Denny, Aenea Wilburg, Thanuja Tiwari, Isabella Arjoon, Angelina Fields, Joel Payne, Rebecca Cameron, and Joshua Singh. Man charged for killing Hill Foot farmer Sep 19, 2024 Court Stories, Features / Columnists, News Kaieteur News – A 34-year-old sawmill operator was remanded to prison on Tuesday after being charged for allegedly killing his reputed wife earlier this month. James Lord called ‘Jamesy’ The accused, James Lord called ‘Jamesy’ made his first court appearance before Magistrate Rhondell Weever at the Wales Magistrate’s Court  where the charge was read to him. He was not required to plea and was remanded. He is scheduled to return to court on October 8, 2024. Kaieteur News reported that on September 8, 2024, Alexis Roxanne Harris called ‘Cullie’ a farmer of Hill Foot, Linden Soesdyke Highway was stabbed to death by Lord who also wounded his nephew and attempted to kill himself during a fit of rage at Free and Easy, West Bank Demerara, Region Three. In a press release police had stated that the now deceased was living with Lord and their children at Hill Foot, Linden Soesdyke Highway. According to the police about two months ago the couple had a misunderstanding and she was allegedly assaulted by him who threatened to kill her.  As a result she moved out of the home with her children, to her sister’s residence in Free and Easy, West Bank Demerara. It is alleged that at about 12:00h on Sunday September 8, 2024 the suspect visited the sister’s residence to see his children.  Harris was reportedly on her cell phone at the time and this angered the suspect, who took away the cell phone and broke it. It was further reported that Harris then went and sat on the stair outside, but Lord followed her, took out a knife from his haversack and attempted to stab her. His nephew, Junior Lord, who was there at the time heard the commotion and intervened. He attempted to take away the knife, but the suspect dealt him a stab wound to his abdomen and he fell. The suspect then rushed towards the deceased and stabbed her in her left breast and on her right hand. She ran and collapsed into a nearby drain, while Lord made good his escape on foot to the sea dam area. Junior Lord was taken to the  West Demerara Regional Hospital by public-spirited citizens where he was treated. Meanwhile, with the assistance of public-spirited citizens, police arrested the suspect. Upon his arrest, two wounds were observed in his abdomen area, which he claimed were self-inflicted. 16 Health professionals graduate from Epidemiology, laboratory training programme Sep 19, 2024 News Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony among other health officials with the 16 graduated health professionals of the Caribbean Regional Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme. Kaieteur News – On Wednesday, 16 of the country’s healthcare professionals graduated from the Caribbean Regional Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme (CR-FELTP). This is according to the Ministry of Health in a statement. The training programme was funded by the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in collaboration with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and the Ministry.  The 16 graduates were drawn from eight regions in the country. The training lasted for seven months. “The CR-FELTP programme trains health professionals from different fields to improve the Caribbean’s ability to prevent diseases and protect public health through evidence-based actions and policies,” the ministry explained. At the graduation ceremony which was held at the Herdmanston Lodge, Georgetown, Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony related that the training was an important one, noting that there is a growing need for awareness and timely reporting of diseases. “I think the importance here is that we’re starting to get more people in tune with some of the things happening locally, regionally, and globally, and this is your first opportunity to understand a little bit more about diseases and how they transmit, and why you need to report so that we can respond in time,” he stated. The minister further stated that he hopes the course is able to serve as a stepping stone for continued learning and as such encouraged the graduates to take opportunities for further training in responding to diseases.  “I hope that with this first course that you have done that this is not the last one, I hope that it wasn’t too difficult and that you’ll go on to do other courses because ultimately we want people to be properly trained so that they can respond appropriately to diseases,” the minister said noting that the skills acquired during this training will also be useful as the Ministry is working on eliminating five infectious diseases from Guyana by 2030. In her brief remarks, Public Health Advisor for the US Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, Ms. Sandra Bedoya-Hanson yesterday said that the training programme is “a testament to Guyana’s and CARPHA’s commitment and dedication to growth and strengthening the country’s surveillance capacity.” Related Similar Articles

Bids open for companies to sell Guyana’s oil Sep 19, 2024 News Kaieteur News – The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) has invited eligible companies to submit bids for the provision of marketing services for Guyana’s Oil. According to an advertisement released by the MNR, the bidders will be putting their submissions for an opportunity to market Guyana’s oil entitlement from Lot 1 – Liza Destiny FPSO Vessel, Lot 2 – Liza Unity FPSO Vessel, Lot 3 – Payara Prosperity FPSO Vessel, Lot 4 – Any two (2) Lots combined and Lot 5 – Combined Lots 1, 2 and 3. The advertisement stipulates that bids shall be opened by the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board in the presence of Bidders’ representatives who wish to attend, at 09:00 hrs. on Tuesday 1st day of October 2024 at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board, Ministry of Finance, Main & Urquhart Streets, Georgetown, Guyana or may request a video link from [email protected]. The bids must be valid for 120 days from the date of opening.  Additionally, bidders inter alia may bid for one or more lots as defined in the bidding documents. At present, two United Kingdom companies market Guyana’s oil share. Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat  had revealed that UK company, JE Energy is the marketer of oil coming from the Liza-1 platform which uses the Liza Destiny FPSO, while BB Energy is the marketer for  oil from the Liza-2 and Payara platforms which use the Liza Unity and Liza Prosperity FPSOs, respectively. According to the minister the contract stipulates that neither of the companies charge government for the marketing and will instead pay, in the case of BB Energy Limited, US 26 cents on every barrel it sells. JE Energy plans to pay some US 70 cents on each barrel of crude it markets. The Liza Destiny FPSO is currently producing over 150,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd), up by 30,000 after debottlenecking, a process of optimizing capacity. Its storage capacity is 1.6 million barrels. As for the Liza Unity FPSO, it is also producing 30,000 more barrels than had been announced as it moved from 220,000 bpd to 250,000 bpd after the same optimising process. South American Women’s and Men’s Classic Powerlifting Championships Kaieteur Sports – Guyana got off to a satisfying start at the South American Women’s and Men’s Classic Powerlifting Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina, yesterday when the lone female athlete on the team, Sarah Sanmoogan lifted her way to four bronze medals. The third-year University of Guyana student, pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, who competed in the Female Junior 69kg Category, was in classes until the start of the weigh-in yesterday, 13:00hrs Argentina time, 12:00hrs Guyana time, but still mustered the mental fortitude to compete against her peers, her performance being good enough to earn her podium positions in all the lifts and overall. She had a best squat of 150.0 kg, benchpressed 82.5 with her best deadlift being 160.0. Her overall Total was 392.5kg the same as the silver medalist, Sophia Cabrera of Peru who finished ahead of Sanmoogan by a lighter body weight. Cabrera managed a best squat of 145.0, and benchpressed 85.0. The gold medalist was Chile’s Antonia Madrid whose Total of 422.5kg was as a result of similar medal lifts of 160.0 in the squat, 87.5 in the benchpress, and 180.0 in the deadlift. Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) President, Franklin Wilson congratulated Sanmoogan and Coach Kerma Singh for a brave performance against nations that have been performing well in the sport but Guyana has always held its own and competed well, he noted.
