Saipem launches 2024 Community Development Initiatives in Guyana Sep 17, 2024 News Kaieteur News – Italian oilfield company- Saipem has announced the launch of its 2024 Local Community Initiatives (LCIs) Plan in Guyana, by which Saipem is stepping up its commitment to strengthening relationships with local residents and community stakeholders. In a statement, the company said it has always been engaged in creating lasting value for the communities where the company operates. In alignment with this vision, Saipem in 2024 will focus on empowering individuals and fostering community growth through targeted investments and social programmes. The company said this year, it is partnering with the Women Across Differences to launch two impactful initiatives aimed at supporting women and single mothers in Guyana. Computer Literacy for Single Young Women: In an effort to bridge the digital divide, Saipem will provide computer literacy training for five single, unemployed women aged 18 to 30. Selected through a collaboration with Women Across Differences, these young women will receive a full scholarship to attend the Global Technology Institute, gaining essential skills to enhance their career prospects and overall life quality. Educational Opportunities for Single Mothers: Recognizing the unique challenges faced by single mothers, Saipem will support eight Guyanese single mothers to return to school. These mothers will have the opportunity to enroll in courses at esteemed institutions including the Government Technical Institute (GTI), Guyana Industrial Technical Center, Institute of Distance and Continuing Education, and Carnegie School of Economics. This initiative aims to empower them with the skills needed to support their families and advance their personal development. The Computer Literacy Programme will span eight weeks, while the educational courses for single mothers will last seven weeks with possibility for advanced and prolonged attendance. Both initiatives kick off this month. Similarly to what has been done in 2023, this year Saipem will additionally focus on an internship program, providing valuable work experience to six students coming from technical vocational schools like GTI (Government Technical Institute) and GITC (Guyana Industrial Training Center) and to three final-year engineering students from the University of Guyana. Saipem’s 2024 initiatives represent a significant evolution of the company’s community engagement efforts, dedicated to making a tangible difference in the lives of Guyanese society. Fire guts Region One’s RDC office at Mabaruma Sep 17, 2024 News Some of the damaged furniture and charred walls of the office Kaieteur News – A fire during the wee hours of Monday reportedly gutted the Region One Regional Democratic Council (RDC) office located at Mabaruma. Speaking with Kaieteur News, the Regional Chairman Brentnol Ashley said that he was out of the area when he received a call that the building was on fire. “The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) (at Mabaruma) would have quickly responded and was able to save the structure from being completely destroyed by the fire”, Ashley said. A cell phone recorded video seen by this media house of the aftermath, depicted charred walls, burnt furniture among other damage to the interior of the building. According to Ashley, an assessment is still being conducted to determine the total damage and losses suffered by the RDC. Some persons are speculating that the fire might have been an electrical one because of low voltages that were experienced prior to the blaze. However, the chairman pointed out that the matter is still under investigation. “The authorities (GFS) on this have not provided any conclusion or any verdict on the matter; it is still an ongoing investigation” he noted. Sep 17, 2024 Dem Boys Seh, Features / Columnists, News Kaieteur News – Dave Martins did ask in song: “Where are your heroes, Caribbean?” Well, this past weekend, we say goodbye to another one – Sonny Ramphal. He was a true son of the soil, and a big name across the region. A man who put Guyana and the Caribbean on the map. Ramphal stand up with de best of dem. Leaders from de Caribbean fly in fuh de national funeral. Dem was all there to pay respects. But everybody asking why one man who was missing. Yuh woulda think a funeral for a national hero woulda bring out all de bigwigs. But not this time One man was nowhere in sight. Was he hiding behind a pillar? Or maybe he was sitting where de camera couldn’t reach? Who knows! It was one of dem funerals where you see who missing more than who present. Ah well, like dem boys seh, sometimes presence speak louder than absence. And sometimes absence make more noise than presence. But one thing clear: we have to honor we heroes. We can’t wait till dem gone to show respect. And when we do show up, we can’t be missing in action. Sonny Ramphal walked with the greats of the world. De Caribbean leaders come to stand by him one last time. But de one man everybody expect to see, nowhere in sight. And it not enough to remember dem by tombstones alone. We need monuments too. We need statues, streets named after dem, and scholarships in dem names. We must teach de next generation who these heroes were. Let dem name live on, not just in speeches, but in de things we build to remember dem. Sonny Ramphal deserve more than a spot in de cemetery. He deserve to live on in de hearts of all Guyanese. GT Kanaimas reign supreme with third Heritage Games title Sep 17, 2024 Sports Paruima Men’s Football team crowned 2024 Amerindian Heritage Games (Football) champions. – As Region #7 Paruima Boys crown Men’s champions Kaieteur Sports – The 2024 Amerindian Heritage Games Football finals delivered an electrifying display of skill, passion, and dominance on Sunday as both the GT Kanaimas (Women) and Paruima (Men) football teams claimed their respective titles in resounding fashion. The GT Kanaimas secured their third consecutive Heritage title with a commanding 5-0 victory over the Region 9 All Stars in the women’s final. Glendy Lewis was the star of the show, delivering a stunning brace in quick succession. Lewis found the back of the net in the 21st and 24th minutes, propelling her side to a 2-0 lead inside the first half. AAG General Council refutes claim of engagement with Allied Arts to scrap “Nationals” Sep 17, 2024 Sports Kaieteur Sports – The tested and proven format of the National Inter-Schools Athletics Championships which is now being revamped by the Ministry of Education (MoE) through Allied Arts is causing a furore among the other stakeholders. The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), one of the main stakeholders, in terms of the event management, is refuting claims made by Head of Allied Arts Nicholas Fraser about an engagement with its General Council, who according to him was consulted for the change of the original format and for training of teachers and other officials in the various education districts. According to multiple sources, no such engagement occurred, adding that it is somewhat disingenuous for the education official to make such a claim, knowing that it did not occur. “We know nothing of such a meeting and are surprised to see an article appear in Stabroek News of September 16 quoting Fraser as saying he had consulted with the Athletic Association,” the sources stated. The sources further emphasised that there was neither a formal or informal meeting so for Fraser to come out and say that the AAG is on board is not accurate, but false. The issue at hand is the MoE’s abrupt proposal to move the annual Athletics Championships from its usual yearend schedule to March 2025 which according to the ministry will serve as more beneficial to the athletes. However, the AAG is contending that in the absence of a thorough scientific survey about the benefits the Ministry is touting, there should be serious deliberations with all stakeholders, to examine the impact, before any change is made or instituted. Areas necessary to examine before implementation are participation, student athletic development, healthy lifestyles, and impact on examination at grade 6 and CSEC levels. The sources added that they are not against change, but the lack of consultation and the absence of proof about the benefits are the contentious issues right now. “The system is not broken so why try to fix it, our athletes have been performing outstandingly both in terms of their track success and academically and we have the support of the MoE to support this notion, so why try to disrupt what is working without a thorough evaluation ,” one of the council members  contended. The sources urged that it would be wise for the MoE to rethink its unilateral imposition and engage the AAG and other stakeholders in a meaningful way to arrive at a general agreement that will be embraced by all stakeholders.
