Amerindian Heritage Games 2024 kicks off today at Everest Sep 11, 2024 Sports lashback! GT Kanaimas celebrate winning the 2023 edition of the Amerindian Heritage Games football competition. Kaieteur Sports – Continuing on the month-long celebration, the 2024 Amerindian Heritage Games will commence today at Everest Sports Ground, running through Sunday, September 15. The event, which is the hallmark of Amerindian Heritage celebrations, shines a spotlight on Indigenous sportsmanship and culture. This year’s theme, “Many Voices, One Song,” emphasizes unity and the rich heritage of Guyana’s Indigenous peoples. Defending female champions, the GT Kanaimas’ on the other hand is set enter the football aspect of the Games high on confidence, aiming to secure their third consecutive title. Their male counterparts however, are determined to win their first championship. Last year, the Kanaimas’ female squad emerged victorious after defeating Region 10’s powerhouse in a thrilling 4-2 final. Head Coach Len Thomas expressed his confidence ahead of the games. “We’re feeling so confident that the females will take it for the third year in a row. For the males, we’re aiming to step up to the plate and follow in the footsteps of our female team,” Thomas said in a recent interview. When asked about the team’s strategy, Thomas highlighted the importance of unity and ball control. “We try to keep the ball as much as possible so the other team has to chase it. That way, we dominate. We work together, train together, and even go on trips together. It’s that togetherness that drives us.” With a strong team spirit and a well-established game plan, the GT Kanaimas are poised to put on an exciting display in this year’s Heritage Games. Guyana horseracing attracting new owners Sep 11, 2024 Sports Jermaine Sripal, Guyana’s new horse owner is making great strides; his horse finished second at the 2024 Guyana Cup. – Js Racing Stables will be a force to reckon with at President’s Cup Kaieteur Sports – Legislation is on the cusp of arriving in Guyana’s horseracing, and the sport is growing. Certainly, the prize money has grown significantly, with the 2023 Guyana Cup having a total purse of G$24 million and this year’s Guyana Cup saw G$40 million being paid out, a G$16 million increase. While the incentives are higher, new horses and new owners are now in Guyana’s horseracing. The most significant new entry into Guyana’s horseracing of recent is Js Racing Stables. The owners, who hail from New Amsterdam, took headlines when they purchased Spankhurst, Guyana’s horse of the year in 2023. Js Racing stables also had a solid entry into Guyana Cup, with their newly imported Nova Sol claiming second in the feature event at Rising Sun Turf Club. The President’s Cup will be an event where others will have their eyes on Js Racing Stables, who will be a force to reckon with on September 22. In addition to Spankhurst and Nova Sol, Js Racing stables made another bold move, to import two top horses from Brazil; Mapa Do Brasil and Companheiro Lea. The established stables in Jumbo Jet and Jagdeo Racing Stables along with the underdog racing stables, Simply Royal Racing Stables and Guyana Cup champion Slingerz Racing Stables has made the upcoming President’s Cup a level playing field. John Bull will be out to defend his President’s Cup title, while Guyana Cup champion Olympic Kremlin will be in search to extend his dominance in Guyana. Nine races are on the provisional programme, and entries open today, (September 11) and closes on September 17. Approximately G$15 million will be divided among nine races at the President’s Cup. The feature race of the President’s Cup will have a total purse of close to G$6,000,000 (six million) dollars and the race will be run at approximately eight furlongs. That race will be open to all horses, three years old and over. Entry forms for the President’s Cup will be at the Port Mourant Race Course, the Rising Sun Turf Club, the Bush Lot United Turf Club and 106 Smyth Street Werk-En-Rust, Georgetown. Hutson returns! Sep 11, 2024 Sports AAG president Aubrey Hutson – AAG president reinstated; willing to serve if re-elected By Rawle Toney Kaieteur Sports – Aubrey Hutson, who was first elected as President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) in 2013, recently returned to his role after a suspension issued by the General Council on April 15 last year. Hutson’s suspension by the AAG’s General Council was a result of various incidents, including a well-documented debacle at the 2023 CARIFTA Games that prompted calls for his removal from the local sports community. The AAG council unanimously voted to remove him, and Amanda Hermonstine, First Vice President, was appointed as Acting President. However, the details surrounding Hutson’s suspension and reinstatement remain unclear, since AAG officials have declined to comment on the specifics. Hutson himself has expressed that his suspension was not legally valid.“The suspension was never legal. That has always been my position,” Hutson told Kaieteur News in an interview, adding “but for the smooth-running of track and field, a sport that I love dearly, I decided to step back.” Although the AAG announced his removal, Hutson claims he voluntarily stepped aside to allow Hermonstine to take over as Acting President. He also highlighted that his suspension was not recognized by international governing bodies such as World Athletics and Atletismo Sudamericano (South American Athletics). Though he stepped back from official duties, Hutson remained active in the sport, offering advice and assistance behind the scenes, despite feeling overwhelmed by his leadership role. He said, “While I was away, I was still assisting, whether people called for advice or contacts for people in international circles…I still was assisting and assisting in the best way possible.” Hutson chose not to pursue legal action against the AAG, preferring not to disrupt the operation of track and field in the country. This decision, he said, demonstrated his ongoing commitment to the sport, despite the administrative challenges. Under Hermonstine’s leadership, the AAG achieved notable success on the international stage, as Guyanese athletes earned gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, the South American U20 Championships, and the CARIFTA Games. Hutson resumed his role shortly before Guyana’s participation in the World U20 Championships in Lima, Peru. But return, however, was met with some resistance from some members of the AAG Council. Hutson told Kaieteur News, that some members felt he should wait to be formally reinstated, but, he insisted that the council did not have the authority to remove him in the first place, saying, “I think they sought legal advice and they were advised that if they want to move in the right direction, they were told to let me function in my role as president.” FUTURE OF HUTSON’S LEADERSHIP Hutson has expressed uncertainty about seeking re-election, adding, that his primary job in track and field has always been about service, not personal ambition. He stated, “I’ve always taken the position that I want to serve. I have a lot of knowledge of the sport, and hence, I would serve.” “My thirst for president has never been there, because from the time I got the first suspension letter, they would’ve been hearing from my lawyer, but I’ve always took the position that I want to serve, I have a lot of knowledge of the sport, hence I would serve,” Hutson said. The AAG is expected to hold elections by the end of the year or early January. Hutson has left the decision to continue his presidency in the hands of the athletics community, pointing out that his focus is on ensuring the AAG is in good standing—legally, financially, and structurally—whether he continues as president, or not. Hutson praised Amanda Hermonstine for her efforts as Acting President, noting her energy and commitment to the sport, “I have to take my hat off to Amanda, I think she tried her best; we all have our limitations, but you can’t say she didn’t try her best.”However, he also acknowledged areas where improvement was needed, particularly in technical decision-making within the AAG. He remarked, “I feel like some of my colleagues still have some work to do…there were some poor technical decisions that were being made in terms of how we approach the sport, but I was comfortable knowing that I did not put the sport in a bad place.” Related Similar Articles

Sawin with 17 were the only other contributors that made double figures. The lawmen failed to capitalize on a wonderful foundation laid by their openers and succumbed for 184/7 off their 30 overs. Ravi Mangali was the pick of the bowlers for Jai Hind with 3 for 33. He was supported by K. Budhoo with 2 for 27. Jai Hind Jaguars with their eyes on a semifinal spot quickly knocked off the required runs in 23 overs to record their first victory. All their top order batters contributed to the run chase which was spearheaded by Z. Zikeer who made 80 with 6 @4s and 5 @ 6s. It took some sensible batting from seasoned Berbice player, Anil Beharry and Dharshanan Lall to put together a 73-run partnership that brought some respectability to the total. Anil Beharry made a well composed 56 with 8 @ 4s and a solitary 6 before he was finally dismissed at 146 to close off the city boys’ innings. Lall contributed a solid 34 with 2 @ 4s and a maximum. The wickets were evenly shared amongst the Invaders-Devendra Madho had 2 for 27 in his 6 overs; Ritchie Bishop took 2 for 18; Ramesh Deonarine took 2 for 23 and Deopaul Drepaul took 2 for 6. The Invaders started very cautiously after losing their first wicket at 23 but continued to maintain the required run rate of just under 5 runs per over. They had reached 93 runs for the loss of 5 wickets after 17 overs when an ugly incident marred the proceedings that resulted in Everest walking off the field. The incident was referred to the tournament referee and the match was subsequently awarded to the Essequibo Invaders. Former Guyana youth player Kevin George (72) leads 4040 WIBS to victory in Canada Sep 11, 2024 Sports Kaieteur Sports – Former Guyana youth player Kevin George struck a blistering 72 to help 4040 WIBS to the 2024 Ontario Round-Arm Softball Cricket Association (ORSCA) T20 Premier Cup championship on Sunday at the Emancipation Park, Brampton. Kevin George Playing against Phoenix X1, the right-handed George slammed 9 sixes and 2 fours during his 45-ball show at the crease. His team reached 157-6 with 5 balls remaining after they had kept Phoenix X1 to a challenging 156-9 from the allotment of 20-overs. George and Sadiq Mohamed featured in an important, 70-run third-wicket stand after 4040 WIBS was struggling at 13-2. Mohamed contributed a useful 23 and his demise sparked a middle-order collapse before skipper Aftaba Shamshudeen settled things with an undefeated 36. The right-handed Shamshudeen, a former Canadian International player, hit 4 sixes and a boundary from 20 balls as Hemnarine Chattergoon, another player with Canadian experience, grabbed 2-26 from his maximum four overs. Earlier, the debutant team 4040 WIBS won the toss and without hesitation opted to bowl. The decision seemed justifiable after Andy Diaram departed for zero at 6-1. However, Chattergoon and the other opener Sanjay Ramlakhan stabilised things with an eventful, 60-run partnership. Chattergoon galloped to a half-century (54) which contained 5 sixes and 3 fours off 25 balls. Ramlakhan supported him with 20. Kunauth Harry batted well to make 33 having clobbered four sixes. Abdool Gamal Hamid was the star-bowler for 4040 WIBS with outstanding figures of 4-24 in his 4-over outing. Rajin Outar offered good support with 2-34 from his four overs while George had 1-30 (4) to supplement a fine all-round performance which gave him the player-of-the-match award. At the post-match presentation ceremony, the winning side collected a trophy and Phoenix X1 one as well. Chattergoon took home a trophy too for being the Most Valuable Player for Phoenix X1. President of the ORSCA Mitch Bacchus congratulated 4040 WIBS and also shared similar sentiments to Phoenix X1 having participated in the championship encounter.
