Malachi Austin had a devastating end to his medal campaign at the World U20 Championships.
– Athaleyha Hinckson to compete in today’s women’s 200m
By Rawle Toney
Kaieteur Sports – Guyana’s 12-year medal drought at the World U20 Championship continues, as Malachi Austin was unable to finish his Men’s 400m semifinal race in Lima, Peru last evening.
With about 150 meters to go, Austin, who was in lane 5 and in a prime position to finish in the top two, suddenly pulled up. This would have secured him a spot in the finals—a moment of promise turned to heartbreak.
Reports reaching Kaieteur News reveal that Austin had earlier voiced concerns about a niggle in his leg during his warm-up.
Tianna Springer narrowly missed advancing in the women’s 400m
Despite the efforts of the Guyanese medical team, who did all they could to prepare the country’s medal hopeful, Austin was heartbreakingly forced to abandon the race. It was especially devastating given that many had seen him as a strong contender for gold.
Since the inception of the World U20 Championships in 1986, Guyana won just one medal—a silver in the women’s 400m, earned by Kadecia Baird at the 2012 U20 Championships in Spain.
Baird clocked an impressive 51.04s to finish second behind the USA’s Ashley Spencer, edging out another American, Erika Rucker.
Baird’s time remains the fastest U20 performance by a South American athlete.
In the semis, the South American U20 and CARIFTA Games U20 400m champion (Austin), cruised to a 46.92 seconds time to finish second in Heat 5 to book his place in the semi-finals.
The 17-year-old Austin, who also holds the Commonwealth Youth Games 400m silver medal, is the only Guyanese athlete so far to progress beyond the heats at the 20th edition of the U20 World Championship.
Tianna Springer, a back-to-back CARIFTA Games champion and Commonwealth Youth 400m champion, narrowly missed qualifying for the next round of the women’s 400m, finishing fourth with a time of 54.49 seconds.
Springer led the race but lost momentum in the final 20 meters.
Narissa McPherson, also competing in the women’s 400m, clocked 54.67 seconds, finishing sixth in Heat 2.
As the competition enters its third day, 16-year-old Athaleyha Hinckson, the 2024 CARIFTA U17 and South American U20 100m champion, will aim to redeem herself in the women’s 200m when she lines up in Heat 3.
Hinckson will be the only Guyanese athlete competing in the 200m.
In the women’s 100m, Hinckson clocked 12.01 seconds, finishing sixth in Heat 1, and did not advance to the next round.

Bowling for East Coast Aash Décor was spearheaded by W. London with 5 for 10. East Coast Aash Décor knocked off the runs in 25 overs for the loss of only 3 wickets to win by 7 wickets. Arthur Duke top scored with 51 scattered with three 6s and three 4s. Seeraj Bhimsain finished unbeaten on 44 with a solitary 6 and three 4s. Earlier, opener N. Samlall scored 26 with a six and three 4s.
Over at the Everest Cricket Club ground, Everest O50s Masters took first strike and rattled up the first 200+ score finishing on 209 for 8 in their allotted 30 overs. Seasoned opener, Sahadeo Hardaiow scored a blistering half century 54 peppered with eight 4s and a maximum. Batting at number 5, Latchman Yadram marshalled the innings with a magnificent unbeaten half century (63) with five 4s and three 6s.
Dharshannan Lall hit a quickfire 33 towards the end laced with four 4s before he was run out. The wickets were evenly shared amongst the Ex Berbice-Policemen.
Taking their turn at the crease, the lawmen flattered to deceive and could only muster 168 off their allotted 30 overs. Ryan DeNobrega compiled a polished 52 and was ably supported by Deoprakash Ramdat with 38 and Zahir Moakan with 25. K Mangal chipped in with 15 but it just wasn’t enough as the Ex Berbice-Police fell short by 41 runs.
North Soesdyke Masters traveled up to the Cinderella County to challenge the Essequibo Invaders but, unfortunately, the match got rained out.
The following day, Essequibo Invaders hosted East Coast Aash Décor at the Reliance ground. 2024 Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier League…
Kaieteur Sports – Jemimah Rodrigues lifted Trinbago Knight Riders into the 2024 Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) final after a nerve-jangling four-wicket victory over Barbados Royals at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad.
Chasing 131 for a place in Thursday’s final, Knight Riders were in big trouble at 43/3 before Rodrigues stepped up with an unbeaten 59 off 50 balls.
The Knight Riders needed six runs off the final over, but a calm Rodrigues hit Hayley Matthews for a boundary on the third delivery before a single on the next ball ensured their title dreams remained alive.
In what turned out to be a dress rehearsal for the final, Knight Riders were 43/3 but capitalised on sloppy fielding from Royals. Rodrigues received a life on 43 when Djenaba Joseph fumbled at short fine leg.
The Knight Riders’ attack had struggled in the tournament, but bowled superbly in the PowerPlay to tear into the Royals’ top-order. Opener Chamari Athapaththu spearheaded a recovery with 70 off 63 to lift Royals to 130/7 but it ultimately wasn’t enough.
Royals had already clinched a place in the final after winning their opening three matches. But it was high stakes for Knight Riders, who entered the match sitting behind Guyana Amazon Warriors on net run rate.
Play was slightly delayed due to rain and the Knight Riders were desperate to make the most of the favourable bowling conditions after winning the toss.
Seamer Shikha Pandey enjoyed the perfect start after nicking off Matthews in the first over with a full delivery that moved late.
Qiana Joseph lived dangerously and rode her luck after being dropped by Jess Jonassen at mid-off. But Joseph’s risky innings soon ended when she bottom edged a wild slash off Shamilia Connell, whose spectacular debut for Knight Riders continued when she clean bowled Aaliyah Alleyne for a duck.
Athapaththu held the innings together, but could not getting going as Royals fell into a lull. The frustrations led to Rashada Williams being dismissed by spinner Samara Ramnath in the 12th over as Royals turned to big-hitter Laura Harris for a spark.
But she holed out first ball leaving the burden on Athapaththu, who accelerated late as Royals finished with momentum.
Knight Riders started their chase disastrously with the early wickets of Harshitha Samarawickrama and captain Deandra Dottin. Jonassen attempted a rally, but she was run out on the last ball of the powerplay.
Rodrigues and Kycia Knight cleverly worked into gaps, but struggled to hit boundaries. Knight unleashed only for Naijanni Cumberbatch to take a brilliant catch running in from the boundary.
But Rodrigues hit a boundary in the penultimate over and kept her composure as the Knight Riders celebrated their place in the final with gusto.
