Nine member team off to St Lucia for OECS Invitational Boxing Championship Jul 25, 2024 Sports Elite boxers Alesha Jackman (left) and Abiola Jackman will be on show in St Lucia. Kaieteur Sports – A nine member team including six pugilists and three officials departed local shores today for St. Lucia to compete in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Invitational Boxing Championship, which is penciled for the Vigie Sports Complex in Castries from July 26-28. The 2024 OECS Championship will showcase the best Caribbean youth, novice, junior, and elite boxers. The tournament will see over 120 visiting delegates participating at this year’s championship. Junior Lightweight pugilist, Shakquain James. Angelina Rogers The roster, which will be supervised by national coach Lennox Daniels, comprises of two Elite boxers Abiola Jackman, (Heavyweight) and Alesha Jackman, (Middleweight), as well as Junior Lightweight, Shakquain James, Junior Bantamweight Angelina Rogers, and Schoolboys Ryan Rogers (Bantamweight), and Junior Madray (31–33 kg). Meanwhile, Lawrence Assanah and Germain Craig will accompany the team to serve as referees and judges, respectively. “Preparation has been good; they have been training for a period of time. I would say the preparation has been 95%. They were training twice a day at the Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis gym,” said GBA Technical Director, Terrence Poole. Probed on the importance of the event given that the Caribbean Schoolboys Championships are slated for August, Poole declared, “This tournament is part of the preparation for the Caribbean Schoolboys Tournament, and it will allow us to see the level of some of our fighters and where they are and where they need to be for that event. It’s very important because it provides international exposure. My expectation is that everyone should do well at the event.” Abiola Jackman Meanwhile, GBA President Steve Ninvalle informed local media that: while the tournament is another step towards exposing local talent, it is also being used to support St. Lucia’s president David ‘Shakes’ Christopher. “Guyana is not part of the OECS but I see it as my duty to support Mr. Christopher who has always returned the favour when Guyana hosting international events. In addition, our objective for tournaments of this nature is the exposure of emerging talents in a competitive international environment,” Ninvalle said. “Moreover, the exposure of females to the rigours of international competition is a major emphasis and priority for the association. We believe that the women’s arm, given the documented challenges that are faced with their initial participation and sustained continuance, requires and is aided by this approach in providing international exposure,” Ninvalle added. The OECS Championship is slated to feature participation from several nations, several of whom will feature in the prestigious Caribbean Schoolboys and Junior Championships in Guyana. Wake tonight at Police SC Eve Leary Kaieteur News – Former national U-19 batter Mark Anthony Rigby succumbed to a stroke on July 11, 2024 after celebrating his 63rd birthday on March 14, 2024. His funeral will take place tomorrow at the LeRepentir cemetery after viewing of the body at Sandy’s Funeral Parlour from 1pm. The Service will be done from 2-3pm. A wake is planned for tonight at the Police Sports Club Eve Leary from 7pm. Rigby represented Police in three-day First Division cricket until the late 1990s. Rigby, an elegant right-hander represented at Guyana in the 1979 and 1980 BAT Regional youth series. One of Guyana’s matches in the 1980 tournament was played at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden. It was during that youth tournament when ‘Riggers’ first met ‘Gus’ Logie who represented Trinidad and Tobago. Similar in stature and style the pair became close friends and Rigby got the nick name ‘Gus Logie. Rigby played at the first division level for Mackenzie Sports where he played with the late Basil Butcher. Rigby then joined the Guyana Police Force and played there for the rest of his first division career for police; scoring the last of his centuries against GYO in 1995 at Eve Leary. Rigby represented Demerara against Berbice in the 1987 One-Day Inter-County final at Albion. Rigby who had recovered somewhat from his first ‘Stroke’ visited GCC earlier this year. Rigby last played cricket in March 2016 at Bourda when a benefit game was organised for former Guyana Opener Paul Persaud who returned home for the first time in 15 years from the USA where he fell ill. Guyana Youth cricketer Jonathan Rampersaud stars in New York for West Coast Warriors Jul 25, 2024 Sports Kaieteur Sports – West Coast Warriors triumphed over Tri County Cricket Club by 104 runs in their latest match on Sunday at Beach 68 where action continued in this year’s New York National Cricket League (NYNCL) 30-over competition. Jonathan Rampersaud West Coast Warriors justified their decision to bat first after tallying up a sufficient 253-7 from the 30-overs and then dismissed Tri County CC for 149 in the 22nd over. Kevin Christian struck a flamboyant, 29-ball 61 to lead the way for West Coast Warriors. Christian belted four sixes and similar number of fours while he got good support from Brandon Cabose who also registered a half-century (55). Cabose, like Christian, batted with equal belligerence having knocked four sixes and two fours from 31 balls. Saffeek Deonarine and Guyana under-19 player Jonathan Rampersaud chipped in with 33 and 21 respectively. Mahendra Maynard and Michael Baker grabbed two wickets apiece bowling for Tri County CC on a responsive surface. Maynard displayed his all-round capability by making 58, the principal scorer for Tri County CC. He hammered eight fours and a six while Fazal Gobin added 47 runs. Right-arm seamer Javed Saffeek produced an outstanding performance claiming 5-27 from his maximum six overs. Cabose certainly enjoyed a terrific game with two wickets from 3.3 off-break overs having conceded 19 runs to supplement his batting contribution. Kenly Adams also in the wicket-column but he went for 49 off five overs and accounted for two victims. Cabose was named player-of-the-match for his all-round brilliance. Meanwhile, in their previous two matches, West Coast Warriors were victorious. They defeated BellHills Stallions Cricket Club by a thrilling two-wicket margin. BellHills batted first and made 114-9 off 30-overs while West Coast Warriors replied with 120-8 with 69 balls to spares. The Berbician Rampersaud spearheaded the chase with a responsible, unbeaten 75 laced with five effortless sixes and six fours. And in the other fixture, the victory was more convincing by a 30-run margin against G.T. Fire. West Coast Warriors compiled a challenging 224 all out from 20-overs while G.T.Fire responded with 194 all out, too, in the 29th over. Youghestir Bachan hit a top-score of 47 for West Coast Warriors and 41 from Christian. Rampersaud was among the runs with 36 and identical score from Vaickesh Dhaniram. When G.T. Fire batted, Errol Velaidum stroked a fighting 35. Cabose bagged 3-35 from his six overs and Adams picking up 2-32 (5.5) to do most of the damage for West Coast Warriors. The action is set to continue this Sunday with another series of matches. For West Coast Warriors, they are currently leading the points standing with 17 after recording seven wins and only suffering a solitary defeat. Ten teams are participating in their Group B. Kaieteur Sports – The NSC/MCYS in collaboration with the GTTA, CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Ltd, Teach Them Young Table Tennis programme has commenced at the National Gymnasium and according to National Table Tennis coach Linden Johnson this is his 21st year for this programme. Chelsea Edghill in her own words 18 years ago on July 10, 2006, “I attended this programme  (Teach They Young). Today, I am preparing to compete at my Second Olympic Games.” The programme commences Monday and will run until August 22, from 10am to 2pm Monday to Friday. This Table Tennis training camp is for beginners and intermediate players to learn the fundamentals and correct techniques and is for players both Boys & Girls age 6 to 16 years old. Parents can send their child/children to this programme as they could be yet another child starting his or her Olympic preparation. This is the only Racket Sport in Guyana with a two times Olympian.
