(Newsroom photo) Kaieteur Sports – After three days of intense action in the 2024 Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Juniors Championship in Tortola, Guyana, former champions and last year’s runner-up, clinched an impressive nine medals, including two golds, two silvers, and five bronzes. Nicholas Verwey secured another gold medal with a remarkable 3-0 victory over Barbados’ Alex Stewart in the Boys U19 final. Verwey dominated the division, defeating Stewart 11-6, 11-9, and 11-2. His tactical prowess proved invincible throughout the championship, maintaining an unbeaten record with wins against Trinidad and Tobago’s Anthony Allum and Barbados’ Dominic Wilson in the first two days. Avery Arjoon also claimed gold in the Girls U15 division, defeating fellow Guyanese Kaylee Lowe in the final. Arjoon’s victories over Lilly Smith and Emily Fung-A-Fat set up the all-Guyanese showdown. Lowe earned her place in the final with wins against Barbados’ Lenna Hamati and Trinidad and Tobago’s Josie Thong. Ethan Bulkan secured a silver medal in the Boys U13 category after Jakob Noblett retired (hurt) in the second game with the score at 6-4 in Bulkan’s favour. Tehani Munroe was the first to win an individual bronze medal for Guyana in the Girls U11 category, achieving a 3-2 victory over Trinidad and Tobago’s Saanvi Chattergoon. Munroe continued her strong performance by defeating Varenya Singh 11-6, 11-6, 12-10 for the third-place spot. Emily Fung-A-Fat claimed bronze in the Girls U15 3-4 place playoff by overcoming Trinidad and Tobago’s Josie Thong. After losing the first game 9-11, Fung-A-Fat rebounded to win 11-6, 11-6 and 11-8. Shiloh Asregado delivered an excellent performance despite missing out on a medal. He defeated Bermuda’s William Frith 3-0 on the final day after strong showings against Trinidad and Tobago’s Yohann Marchock and Malachi McMaster of St. Vincent and the Grenadines with his only loss coming against Bermuda’s Eli Carpol. In addition to individual successes, Michael Alphonso (Boys U19), Safirah Sumner (Girls U17), Emily Fung-A-Fat (Girls U15), Egan Bulkan (Boys U13), and Tehani Munroe (Girls U11) all captured bronze medals in their respective categories. Guyana’s performance at the 2024 CASA Juniors Championship showcases the country’s continued excellence in squash, with promising young talents making their mark on the regional stage. YBG National Schools Basketball Festival continues Kaieteur Sports – Day Two of the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) 2024 National Schools Basketball Festival (NSBF) concluded Monday at the National Gymnasium with President’s College, Queen’s College and St. Rose’s High securing victories in the U14 divisional matches. In the U18 category, Berbice High, Mackenzie High, Vryman Ervin Secondary, North Georgetown, and YBG Academy emerged as winners. The Boy’s U14 division saw President’s College (PC) thrashing Skeldon Line Path (SLP) with a score of 19-5. Romarion Wolfe led PC with 8 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals, while Dontrell Ross added 7 points, resulting in a 14-point victory for PC. Queen’s College handed Berbice High a 10-point defeat in their U14 matchup. Darren Dublin and Jared Boucher were key players for QC, with Dublin scoring 11 points and Boucher contributing 8 points and 10 rebounds. QC secured a 29-19 win by the end of the fourth quarter. Berbice’s Avion Kesney scored 17 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in a valiant effort. St. Rose’s High dominated YBG Academy in game three, achieving an 18-point landslide victory. Brad Cush top-scored with 10 points and 4 rebounds, while Malachi Atwell and Cayden Marks combined for 11 points. St. Rose’s strong defense limited the Berbice side, resulting in a 26-8 final score. Over in the U18 division, Berbice High defeated Chase’s Academic Foundation 42-33. Cayden Pydana excelled with 17 points and 4 rebounds, supported by Stefan Carter’s 11 points and 7 rebounds, and Aberone Collins’ 10 points and 4 rebounds. Despite Benkhai King’s 20-point performance for Diamond Secondary, Mackenzie High cruised to a 30-20 victory. Reyhan Bakkar contributed 8 points and 10 rebounds, Owen France added 6 points and 4 rebounds, and Vladimir DaSilva chipped in with 4 points and 8 rebounds for Mackenzie. The remaining three matches in the Boy’s U18 division saw Vryman Ervin defeating Christ Church Secondary 31-22, YBG Academy overcoming St. John’s College 39-23, and North Georgetown narrowly beating Queen’s College 30-29. Notably, North Georgetown’s Sean Duncan and QC’s Allan Patterson both recorded double-doubles in their game. The festival continued yesterday at the same venue, with sponsorship from Edward B. Bernard Bailey blasts 82 not out in Canada Jul 03, 2024 Sports Kaieteur Sports – Former Guyana youth player Bernard Bailey blasted a cameo, unbeaten 82 helping MS Boys to a commanding, 48-run win over Patricians in the continuation of the 2024 Unisons Sports Federation of Canada (USFC) T20 League competition on Friday at YARL Cedarwood Cricket Ground, Markham. Bernard Bailey Bailey, the son of prominent cricket coach Orin Bailey, hammered eight sixes and two fours as MS Boys rattled up a sufficient 113-2 from the allocation of 10-overs. Patricians, in response, were left at 65-5 at the expiration of the 10-overs. In pursuit of the target, Prasanna Paul made 29 to be the only score of substance as off-spinner Sathurshan Senthoorselvan took 3-4 from 2-overs frugal overs on a slow track. Former Guyana youth skipper Eugene LaFleur hits 97 not out in Canada Jul 03, 2024 Sports Eugene LaFleur Kaieteur News – Former Guyana Under-19 Captain Eugene Lafleur is having another excellent year in Canada thus far having recently stroked an unbeaten 97 for Exodus in the 2024 Etobicoke District Cricket League 40-over tournament. The Berbician knocked three sixes and similar number of fours as Exodus piled up a daunting 265-6 from the allotted 40-overs while Commanders Cricket Club, in reply, were skittled out for 57 in the 22nd over. LaFleur, who led his national team in 2008 in Barbados at the regional level, got good support from Kyle Marshall with 67, while Javid Bacchus chipped in with 31. Ronald Ramnarine and Kavin Silva took two wickets each for Commanders on a Centennial Park pitch in Mississauga. Durbal Shiva offered a fight for Commanders by making 29 not out as former Barbados and West Indies cricketer Ryan Hurley snatched 4-3 from three stingy off-spin overs. LaFleur returned with the ball to claim two wickets bowling left-arm spin while Mark Gordon and Joewayne Powell also accounted for two wickets each. At the toss, Exodus called correctly and batted first, a decision that paid great dividends. Late last year, LaFleur recorded a century (116) for Melbourne Cricket Club in a different competition to demonstrate his consistency in North America. The competition continues on Sunday. Kaieteur Sports – This past Sunday, with a massive crowd and their home supporters behind them, PK Super Squad defeated Barima Nobo by 17 runs in the finals of Gary James Memorial T10 Softball Cricket competition held at Mabaruma Settlement, Mabaruma, Region one. The competition was organized by the daughters of the late Gary James -Treasure Alana James- Amin and Cherish James, and family. Super Squad batted first on a pitch with lots of moisture and got off to a flier, as they posted 75 runs for the loss of 2 wickets from their allotted 10 overs. PK Super Squad opening batters Angel Joseph made a fluent 29, Collette Mingo belted 15 (2×4) while not out batters Abigale Boyce and Zeritha Benjamin contributed 21 (3×4) and 3 runs respectively. Natasha Benjamin and Stacy Benjamin were the main wicket takers for Barima Nobo with 1 wicket apiece. Meanwhile, Barima Nobo in reply, were skittled out for 58 runs. Lorenzo Daniels 15 (3×4) and Natasha Benjamin 12 (1×6) were the main contributors with the bat. Meanwhile, PK Super Squad bowlers Rayanna Benjamin, Jennifer James, Abigale Boyce and Zeritha Benjamin were the main wicket takers as they sealed a comfortable victory and pocketed $200,000 cash. Marvin Forde had a brilliant 4-wicket spell for UDCA. GCA were bowled out from 100 all out in 34.4 overs batting first with a string of scores from National youth players Shamar Apple (38), Dave Mohabir (18*) and Emmanuel Lewis (12). A pair of wickets apiece from Patrice Fraser (2-17) and Yudesh Seetaram (2-24)  including opening batsman Parmeshwar Ram (1-10), headlined the bowling for West Demerara. Opener Arvind Suknanan stroked a gritty 124-ball 45 with just one four while Ram hit two fours in his 17 and 11 from Seetaram, got them over the line. GCA had a spirited bowling performance and almost pulled off a win were it not for the nerves of the West Demerara tailenders. East Coast Cricket Board (ECCB) beat Upper Demerara Cricket Association (UDCA) by 190 runs  After posting 219-8, thanks to primary scorers Vikash Wilkinson (47), Arun Gainda (39) and 22 from Yannick Newton, it was light work for ECCB who mauled their opponents by a huge 190-run deficit. Spinner Marvin Forde was the most successful bowler with figures of 4-23 bowling for UDCA.
