Kaieteur Sports – Right-handed opening batsman Azher Ali struck a brilliant 101 to spur Riverside Cricket Club to a comfortable, 38-run win over Concord Eagles last Sunday at Keney Park 1 and in the process they retained the Connecticut Cricket League (CCL) T20 trophy.
Riverside Cricket Club was invited to take first strike and they rattled up a competitive 180-4 from the 20-overs, while Eagles Concord, in reply, was left stranded at 142-7 when the 20-overs ran out.
The richly inform Ali hammered seven fours and slammed six sixes during his 63-ball show at the crease.
He also participated in a steady, 88-run second-wicket stand with Adil Sardar who contributed a vital 38 not out while former Albion player Jason Bishram scored an enterprising 27.
Ashish Massey grabbed two wickets for 41 runs from his maximum four overs delivering for Eagles on a responsive pitch.
When Concord Eagles batted, Faisal Choudary hit a fighting 37 while Munawar Douse offered some resistance as well to make 30.
Pacer Shannor Douse claimed 2-23 from three tidy overs while he got useful support from off-spinner Beesham Surujnarine with 2-34 in his four-over outing.
Ali was named player-of-the-match for his outstanding, batting performance.
Meanwhile, in the semi-final fixture, Riverside Cricket Club, the champion team for the past three consecutive years, got the better of West Indian Social Club by 9 wickets.
Ali was the star-batsman as well with an attractive, unbeaten 66. The West Indian Social Club team possessed some prominent names but Riverside Cricket Club proved their all-round skills. Their side included the Blackwood brothers.
Captain of Riverside Cricket Club Naizul Hussain stated that team played as a unit throughout the competition and winning the championship for three straight years he must attribute the success to hard-work and commitment. Husain represented Albion and Berbice youth team before his migration to the USA.
