Berbice man feared drowned in Linden

Kaieteur News – A mechanic from Brighton Village, Corentyne, Berbice is feared drowned after he went swimming at the Coomacka Mines Beach, Upper Demerara River, Region 10 on Sunday afternoon.

Missing is 21-year-old Nazim Hamid.

It was reported that the incident occurred at approximately 16:00hrs.

According to a statement from police, a 16-year-old female student from Wisroc Housing Scheme in Linden, said she and Hamid were involved in a relationship and he would visit her regularly on the weekend.

“The student said Nazim visited Linden on Saturday, 14th June 2025. The following day (Sunday 15th June at about 15:30hrs), she, Nazim and some friends visited the Coomacka Mines Beach (Upper Demerara River) to swim,” police said.

Police added that the 16-year-old said that Hamid began swimming towards the center of the river where he began to sink. The teen shouted for help but before anyone could respond, Hamid’s body went below the surface of the river and disappeared.

She told police that public-spirited persons who were in the area, began to search for Hamid’s body but he was not found.
