Berbicians who applied for house lots last year will get allocation this year—Pres Ali

Ongoing construction of three-bedroom flat housing units in Palmyra

This announcement was made by President Irfaan Ali on Sunday during an engagement at the University of Guyana Tain Campus, where he discussed the government’s sustainable development plans for the region. During the discussion, President Ali stated, “They are issuing a letter now that every single person in this region that would have applied for house lot up to December 2024, that before the end of this year, you will have your allocation.”

In addition to the upcoming allocations, President Ali revealed that construction will soon begin on approximately 300 homes for young professionals in the region. He noted that work is ongoing on the first 100 set of three-bedroom flat housing units in Palmyra. “We are building the first 100 young professional homes in Palmyra. They better make it 400—they gotta start another 300 for me. I’m shocked there is only 100 so far and another 100 which is a three-bedroom flat,” the President added.

The housing sector has been allocated $112.6 billion in the 2025 national budget. Earlier this year, in January, Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal announced that 25,000 house lots are expected to be allocated in 2025, with a target of completing 15,000 of those within the first half of the year.

At the Ministry’s end-of-year press conference in January, it was also reported that the government is on track to exceed its goal of distributing 50,000 house lots by 2025. As of January 2025, the Ministry had already allocated 40,290 residential lots, including 10,791 distributed in 2024. Additionally, to support the expansion of the national housing programme, 19 new housing areas were developed throughout the past year across several regions. These include developments in Wales (Region Three), Good Hope, La Bonne Intention, and other parts of Region Four, as well as areas in Regions Five, Six, and Ten, and along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
