Can the Guyana embassies abroad handout the GY$100,000 equivalent?
Dear Editor,
Deepest of gratitude to you, your staff and Kaieteur management for publishing my November 2, 2024, letter, titled “Will Guyanese citizens abroad really come home for the promised GY$100,000?”
As a continuation thereof, it is a universally established and accepted diplomatic fact that though the land in the foreign soil belongs to the host country, the EMBASSY/CONSULATE itself belongs to the foreign country it represents. I draw this aphorism as it relates to Guyana and, further, using the NY- Guyana route as an example.
The current NYC Subway fare, one way, is US $2.90. The approximate one-way airfare from JFK to CJIA is US$300. Instead of Guyanese citizens abroad coming to Guyana to receive the GY$100,000, would it not, therefore, be more efficient, cost effective and fiscally prudent for Guyana’s Embassies/ Consulates, abroad, to provide the same level of service for the GY $100,000 handout? Granted, scheduling and other logistics may have to be incorporated and “out of the box thinking” may have to be leveraged. But is this doable? Will FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) that Guyana is a signatory to, be in play?
Think of the gratitude and goodwill that will abound- unless, of course, the GOG wants the citizens to come to Guyana, COLLECT the GY$100,00 but SPEND GY$500,000 before exiting Guyana.
