Barbados is being represented by a six-member team at the 67th Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships (CAGC) in the Dominican Republic this week. The team will compete in the men’s category for the Hoerman Cup.

The 2024 CAGC is being hosted by FedoGolf at the Bavaro Iberostar Golf Club in Santo Domingo, July 31-August 2.

Nicholas Phillips is the team captain, along with Christopher Jackman, Dario Sargeant, Maurice Forde, William Jacobsen, and Xzavier Wiggins.

The tournament teed off after an opening ceremony on Wednesday morning. At the end of the first day of strokeplay, Wiggins was the overall leader for Barbados, tied for 10th in individual competition at +2.

Overall, the four-time champions, Barbados, were in eighth place out of nine teams. Defending champions Puerto Rico (-3) held the top spot, followed by the hometown team, Dominican Republic (+2), and Jamaica (+8) in third.

Shooting a +37 gross, Barbados trailed the Bahamas, Trinidad & Tobago, the Cayman Islands, and the US Virgin Islands after Day 1.

In 2023, Barbados ended sixth in the Hoerman Cup competition. Up to press time, they were trailed only by the Turks & Caicos Islands.

The CAGC began in 1957, when Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago competed in the inaugural Hoerman Cup, donated by Dr Erik Hoerman of Jamaica. Barbados was the sixth territory to join the competition, in 1970.
