Cop on $90k bail for allegedly assaulting ex-lover, possession of firearm

Kaieteur News- Forty-four-year-old Kevon Denny of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) was released on bail, when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on charges of allegedly assaulting his ex-lover and possession of unlicensed firearm.
Denny appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty who read the charges. The officer was not required to plea. It is alleged that on April 16, 2024 at Jamoon Drive, West Rumiveldt Housing Scheme Georgetown, Denny assaulted Christine Baird. Â Additionally, on the same date at the said address, the officer had in his possession, an unlicensed 38 pistol gun.
The defence was led by Attorney-at-law Leslie Sobers, who told the court that his client and the victim were in a relationship and due to him no longer having interest in her, the charges appeared. He noted that the victim has his clients’ belongings and when he went to uplift them, she refused to give it to him. Attorney Sobers assured the court that Denny is not a flight risk and requested that his client be released on self-bail.
Attorney-at-law Casside Nurse representing the victim said that Baird does not have Denny’s belongings, noting that he left nothing behind when he left. The prosecution objected to self-bail. Magistrate McGusty released Denny on $15,000 bail for the assault charge and $75,000 for the possession of unlicensed firearm charge. The matter was adjourned until May 9, 2025.
