ONTARIO VILLAGE, Cayo District, Mon. Nov. 10, 2025
A couple was killed in a car accident in Ontario Village, Cayo District, early on Sunday morning, November 9.
Jovan Middleton, 27, was driving a GMC SUV along the George Price Highway with his girlfriend, 27-year-old Ashley Mejia, at about 2:00 a.m. Sunday when the vehicle reportedly hit a culvert near the entrance of Ontario. The SUV then flipped and landed on the left side of the road.
When first responders arrived at the scene, they found the apparently motionless couple inside the mangled vehicle and were able to take them out of the car, but both of them died at the scene.
“We are taking this loss rough,” said Valerie Middleton, sister of Jovan. “It’s unexpected, and so we’re asking for prayers from everyone so that our family can find peace. My mom, my dad, my siblings, and our families are trying hard to cope. It’s difficult,” she added.
Valerie mentioned that Jovan and Mejia were traveling from Belmopan to his home in the village when the accident occurred.
She said that their family had experienced a similar grief, when another of her siblings was killed in a road traffic accident several years ago.
“One of the things that makes it even rougher for my mom and dad, [is] having lost a child three years ago, in an accident, likewise, and so this makes it extra difficult to cope with this loss,” Middleton mentioned.
A post-mortem examination will be performed on Middleton to determine if he had been under the influence of alcohol when the accident took place.
The deceased Middleton had been working at the Ministry of Human Development for over a year before his untimely demise. He was the youngest of seven siblings.
