Drivers risk arrest, licence suspension for failing to pay e-tickets -AG

Kaieteur News- Drivers who contest or fail to pay their e-tickets could face serious consequences, including arrest, conviction and licence suspension, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall has noted.

The new e-ticketing system for traffic offences, which was launched on Monday, has already recorded a number of traffic violations. The system efficiently tracks and addresses traffic violations, with tickets being sent through messages, WhatsApp, email, registered post, and hand delivery.
During his weekly programme, Issues in the News on Tuesday, Nandlall explained the severe penalties for non-compliance of speed limits and wearing of seatbelt. He said if drivers do not pay their tickets or appear in court to contest them, the case will proceed in their absence.
An arrest warrant may be issued, and the case can be heard ex parte, meaning the driver can be convicted without being present. In addition, the driver’s licence may be suspended and will remain so until the outstanding ticket is paid, said Nandlall.
“The database will generate tickets only in relation to the registered owner of the vehicle, so if you the registered owner gives someone else to drive your vehicle you will get the ticket not the driver, because the database does not have the driver in it, so when you get the ticket, you will have to go to the court to explain that you are not the driver and who the driver was and that driver will also be named as a defendant and he will be issued with a ticket as well.”
The fine for a speeding ticket is $7,500 while a seatbelt offence is $5,500. Nandlall is urging drivers to comply with traffic laws and address their tickets promptly to avoid severe legal consequences.
