Bob Marley once said, “The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability, to affect those around him positively.” Today’s men have the power and responsibility to shape the next generation by being positive role models in our homes, communities and workplaces.
Positive male role models are critical because they combat negative influences, break harmful stereotypes, and provide young people with examples of integrity, compassion, and resilience. As a former guidance counselor, I have witnessed how the presence of engaged and supportive men can reduce risky behaviors, increase self-esteem, and foster healthier relationships.

This International Men’s Day, we must take time to celebrate these role models—the fathers, brothers, mentors, teachers, and leaders who inspire us daily. Recognizing their contributions not only highlights their impact but also encourages more men to step into this essential role.
Growing up without a father, there were many male role models who stepped up and had an immeasurable impact on my life. I’ve learned the value of discipline from phenomenal coaches like Bradbury Brown, Kenny “Big Bird” James, George Hughes, Tyrone “Pacer” Williams and Derrick “Pretty Boy” Edwards, who taught me about perseverance and being a good team player. I learned the importance of empathy from teachers like John Williams and Myrick Smith who always listened. I experienced firsthand the strength of kindness from many father figures like Mr. Leibert Francis who led by example and remains a part of my inner circle. I am thankful to all of the who men helped to shape my journey and have inspired me to lead with purpose and integrity.

I understand the profound impact of having a positive role model—and the void created when one is absent. This drives me to be the example I wish I had, not only for my son but for the youth in my community. Through sporting events and community initiatives, I strive to inspire the youth in my community by being present, lending a listening ear, and embodying values like integrity, confidence, and hard work. My goal is to show them that success isn’t just about personal achievement but about lifting others and creating a legacy of positivity and purpose.
Being a positive role model begins with self-care—mentally, physically, and emotionally. Men who prioritize their well-being are better equipped to nurture others, share responsibilities, and strengthen their communities. Practicing empathy and open communication shows young men that vulnerability and kindness are strengths, not weaknesses.

By embracing emotional authenticity and challenging traditional gender roles, men create a more equitable and compassionate society. These changes empower boys to lead with integrity and girls to pursue opportunities without limitations.
When men invest in mentorship and community engagement, they create ripples of positive change that benefit everyone. Let us honor the men who inspire us and commit to being the role models who shape a brighter, stronger future. True greatness lies in leading with integrity, compassion, and purpose. To all of the men in Antigua and Barbuda, let it begin with us!
