‘Everything doesn’t have to end in violence’ – Vybz Kartel’s message to youths

Kaieteur News- Jamaican dancehall artiste Adidja Palmer, popularly known as ‘Vybz Kartel’ on Friday urged youth to choose peace and walk away from violence.
Kartel, who was a guest of President Irfaan Ali at State House in Georgetown, stressed the need for a shift in the mindset of Caribbean youth. President Ali hosted an interaction with Kartel and local artistes who were allowed to ask the famed singer questions about his craft.

“Young men think they feel the need to push toxicity and mistake that with masculinity, right and that is the problem with Caribbean people that are the mindset where we need to change,” he stated.
Kartel, who was recently released from prison after spending 13 years behind bars, shared his perspective on the importance of conflict resolution and the power of communication. He noted that many disputes, particularly in underprivileged communities, could be avoided if individuals were willing to de-escalate situations.
“Lemme give you an example, alright, a lot of conflicts that take place in the ghetto across the region. It could have been avoided, but no one wants to stand down. You understand? No one wants to be a bigger man and just say, I’m sorry, words like that. I’m sorry. I never knew,” he said.
The Jamaican artiste who is also labeled ‘The World Boss’ urged young people to embrace positivity, respect, and open dialogue rather than resorting to violence. He stressed that masculinity should not be defined by aggressive behaviour but rather by wisdom and self-control.
“Talk to one another. Everything don’t have to end in a fist fight or a gun fight or a knife fight. Talk things over. Believe that you can be a man without having to take up a gun, take up a knife, shoot someone,” he advised.
Reflecting on his own experience, Kartel credited his faith and perseverance for his release and encouraged youths to listen to guidance from their elders. He also highlighted the importance of making wise decisions and heeding advice.
“In Jamaica, we have a saying: ‘Who can’t hear, ago feel,’ and trust me, ghetto youth, what I’ve been through, you know, I don’t wish that on anyone else,” he stated.
He added, “That’s why I come out with a positive mindset, no bitterness, no anger, just coming out giving and forgiving as I have been forgiven.”
